Juhi Chawla got married in 1995, when she was at the peak of her career, to businessman Jay Mehta. At that time, she was seen in popular films like Naajayaz, Loafer, Daraar. It is said that the wedding was quite a hush-hush affair, with just a few family members and close friends present. After all these years, she opened up about why she kept her marriage a secret for a long time.

Juhi was recently in conversation with Rajeev Masand on his show ‘Women We Love‘, where he asked her about her decision to keep her marital status under wraps in the initial days.

To that she said:

At that time, you did not have the internet and you did not have cameras on every phone, so you could do it that way. I was just about established and doing well. That’s the time Jay was serenading me and I was afraid of losing my career just when I had kind of got there. I wanted to carry on and this seemed the midway.

Speaking about her love story with Jay, she recalls how they first met briefly with their friends, even before she went on to become an actress. She says that from then on, he was there everywhere she went and would serenade her with flowers and notes and gifts.

She adds:

On my birthday, I remember he sent me a truckload of red roses. I was like, ‘What do you do with a truckload of flowers?’ He did all he could. After a year, he proposed.

The couple are now happily married for 25 years now and have two wonderful kids — their daughter Janhavi and son Arjun.
