Leather just got an upgrade, as the fashion industry is substituting it with the high-shine, glossy vinyl. Gone are the days, when a leather jacket or a bag skinned out of an animal was a trend. In today’s day and age, it is a gruesome crime to indulge in such luxuries.

Hence, designers and tastemakers of the world are moving towards using, this synthetic material, along with PVC. They say fashion repeats itself, and this trend is a classic example of the same. This trend was popular back in the 60’s owing to the space age. Designers like John Galliano and Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing have used vinyl in their collection as well.

Styling vinyl pieces may be intimidating, but the key tip to keep in mind is to choose a style that aligns with your personal aesthetic. Vinyl is an easy way to add some edge to your ensemble. From pants, skirts, boots to jackets, there is a vast variety of ways in which you can wear the fabric.

Take a cue from our Bollywood celebrities on how to style the vinyl trend.

#1 Alaya Furniturewala’s vinyl skirt

The new kid on the block, Alaya left everyone impressed with her chic promotional looks, for her debut film. One of the many delicious looks she served, included a vinyl skirt. She wore her black vinyl skirt with a feminist tee, tied on one side to make it cropped. The best way to balance out a mini skirt is to pair it with basics.

#2 Ananya Panday‘s bubblegum pink bodycon dress

When Aqua said “wrapped in plastic, it’s fantastic”, they probably meant a look like this one. This has to be one of my favourite looks on Ananya. She wore a body-con halter neck, bubblegum pink vinyl dress. When going for a classic silhouette like a bodycon dress, try to have fun with the hue and go for candy or neon colours to make a statement

#3 Nora Fatehi‘s high-gloss pants

Patent leather trousers are certainly a head turner and eye-catching. So, it is best to pair them with softer basics, such as a feminine blouse, a chambray shirt or neutrals the way Nora did. She styled her paper bag waist trousers, with a neutral fitted tank top. Nora topped the look off with a pair of big hoops and a slender YSL heel. The body-hugging tank top helps balance out the baggy pants, and its neutral hue makes sure that the vinyl pants are still the accent piece of the outfit.

Karan Johar‘s holographic blazer

If you’re looking for an edgier look, a vinyl jacket might just be the perfect piece for you. Karan Johar has experimented with the vinyl trend, several times for his airport looks. He added some suave and structure to this futuristic trend, by wearing it in a blazer. He wore a holographic, vinyl blazer, with a basic black tee and jeans. Another way designers love playing with the Vinyl trend is by using the glossy, and high shine texture of the fabric to make it holographic. A look like this is a great way to bring a futuristic element into your daily wear.
