We’re getting major FOMO or I guess the better-coined term for this would be ROMO—the reality of missing out. With all the upcoming wedding festivities being cancelled or postponed due to this global pandemic we’re missing those parties something fierce. I know, most of us might be missing the enjoyment of shopping for our perfect guest appearances or getting decked out and dancing the night away. So, I thought why not take a walk down memory lane and take a look at some amazing bridal styles favoured by our iconic B-town celebs on their special day.

Bollywood has always inspired Indian fashion for decades, especially bridal outfits, whether it be in the movies or reality. A lot of us look up to our favourite actresses for inspiration for our own upcoming nuptials and pin ideas to our Pinterest broad. From the ever-elegant Madhuri Dixit to more recent modern brides like Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra these beauties always make amazing fashion choices. Whether it be more subtle pieces from the ’90s or more vibrant looks in recent years, bridal fashion has definitely had an evolution. However, some pieces really create a style statement and continue to be iconic to this day.

Then:

1. Kajol Devgan

In 1999, one of Bollywood’s favourite and most endearing couples, Kajol and Ajay Devgan, got married in a low-key ceremony. Looking like a Maharashtrian queen, she wore a forest green, nauvari sari, draped in the kashti style. This was complemented with her traditional jewellery that consisted of a nath, armlet and matching set of green bangles.

2. Madhuri Dixit Nene

While we don’t have Madhuri’s intimate wedding photos we did find one of her in her gorgeous reception dress. The famous Dhak Dhak girl looks beautiful and elegant in her gold and peachy pink ghagra-choli. While her outfit might seem very vintage now it was a popular look back then. And to no ones surprise, of course, Madhuri carried it off with so much grace and elegance and looking no short of a million bucks!

3. Twinkle Khanna

In 2001, Twinkle married her Khiladi, Akshay Kumar in a quick and quiet ceremony. The daughter of yesteryear stars, Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia who barely had any time to plan the wedding went for a red and gold salwar kameez. Radiating like a new bride in this image she looks ethereal in her understated ensemble and modest jewellery, where the statement piece was her lovely mang tikka.

4. Karisma Kapoor

All of Karisma’s wedding outfits were designed by Manish Malhotra who was a lot of brides’ favourite designer by this time. She ditched the traditional red bridal colours and opted for a baby pink lehenga thus standing out from her contemporary brides that year. Her lehenga was intricately embroidered and paired with beautiful diamond-studded jewellery and a mang tikka that dazzled. But the cherry on top was the traditional nathini that just elevated the entire look. She looked so effortless.

5. Raveena Tandon

In 2004, Raveena got married in a traditional Punjabi Khatri and Sindhi style wedding that looked evidently like a lavish wedding. She dazzled in a maroon, velvet lehenga that was originally her mothers and reworked by designer Manav Gangwani. While she stuck to traditional colours, what truly stood out was the blinding gold threads and semi-precious stones on her long-sleeved choli. This ensemble was a definite style statement! Plus, let’s not forget that she literally was a queen on her wedding day. She sat in a 100-year-old palanquin that carried the Queen of Mewar. Now that’s how you make an entrance!

6. Aishwariya Rai Bachchan

One of the bigger Bollywood weddings of the last decade, the Bachchan wedding was definitely the talk of the town. Staying true to her roots, Aishwariya wore a golden, yellow Kanjeevaram saree designed by Neeta Lulla. Though native to a South Indian wedding in style, the saree had an ornate, coloured border complete with Swarovski crystals and gold thread work. Looking like royalty, she paired the saree with matching gold jewellery and kept her hair in a braided bun with gajra as most Mangolorian brides do. This a regal look for sure with a saree style that is still popular to date.

Now:

7. Kareena Kapoor Khan

Kareena looks gorgeous in almost everything that she wears, but on her wedding day, she truly looked magical. Officially the Begum of the Pataudi Khandan after her marriage to Saif Ali Khan, Kareena shone in her mother in law—Sharmila Tagore’s wedding gharara. This is a family heirloom that originally belonged to Saif’s grandmother and was expertly redone and touched up by designer Ritu Kumar.  The golden coloured gharara style dress and heavy gold jewellery give a very regal and sophisticated air to Kareena on her wedding day making her look even more the perfect Pataudi bride.

8. Preity Zinta

Keeping it true to her Indian roots at heart, Preity looks exquisite in her favourite designers’ red lehenga. Manish Malhotra designed Priety’s vibrant lehenga with gold embroidery detailing and royal motifs on the border for her special day. Paired with a Borla, Polki jewels and understated makeup, this look is a great inspiration for modern brides going down the more simple yet elegant and traditional route for their weddings.

9. Anushka Sharma

One of the many popular celeb Sabyasachi brides on our list, Anuskha’s bridal wear is still a popular one many try to emulate to date. Her gorgeous pale, pink coloured lehenga with embellished lotus motifs is absolutely breathtaking and very romantic. It suits Anushka perfectly, making her look like a blushing bride. The matching jewellery also from ace wedding couturier Sabyasachi Mukherjee, really complimented her entire look without being too overwhelming.

10. Sonam Kapoor Ahuja

It seems 2018 was the year of major celeb weddings. Starting with the fashion-forward Sonam Kapoor. Needless to say, everyone was super excited to see what she would choose for her wedding to, beau Anand Ahuja. Sonam finally surprised all of us and chose a gorgeous classic red lehenga, covered with intricate gold embroidery from Anuradha Vakil. She completed her entire look with a pearl headpiece plus vintage jewellery and topped it all off with some Jimmy Choo heels.

11. Neha Dhupia

One of the more low-key weddings of all Bollywood actresses in recent years. Done by couturier Anita Dongre, Neha’s fresh, pastel pink lehenga vibed perfectly for her simple daytime ceremony. It was an elegant and lightweight blush creation that was made using rich silk fabric. It comprised of a choli with elbow-length sleeves and a voluminous skirt and sheer dupatta with a mint green border.  She kept her lehenga and makeup soft and understated, but her jewellery choices were much more striking. She wore a choker known as the princess necklace around her neck. Matching jhumkas, maang tikka teamed with red chooras completed her entire outfit. A mesmerizing yet understated look that makes an impact on your big day!

12. Deepika Padukone

Our next popular Sabyasachi bride on the list is Deepika who had two special wedding ceremonies. For her Konkani ceremony, Deepika opted for a dull gold and red Kanjivaram, traditional silk saree with woven gold threads from The House of Angadi. Paired with layered necklaces and matha Patti, she made for an elegant South Indian bride.

While for the Sindhi ceremony she wore a Sabyasachi creation in red and gold paired with some striking Polki jewellery which really made her whole look shine. The bridal dupatta and lehenga were covered in a very intricate and detailed embroidery. A fantastic traditional look that made her look like the epitome of a Northern bride.

13. Priyanka Chopra Jonas

Priyanka is another bride who favoured two major designers for her wedding ceremonies. The first was a Ralph Lauren‘s special custom creation for her catholic ceremony.  The only word I can say for this dress is wow! This full-sleeved, white lace gown with a sheer top panel is something special for sure. It consisted of 135 satin covered buttons, mother of pearl paillettes, Swarovski crystals and a veil that went on for miles! A key detail sown in was a piece of her mother-in-law’s wedding dress.

While Priyanka had many gorgeous outfits for her festivities her Sabyasachi lehenga was the standout stunner! The vibrant, glittering, red lehenga choli looked stunning against her complexion and a bright red lip. The entire ensemble was embellished with crystals, hand-cut organza flowers, silk floss French knots and Siam-red crystals. But let’s not forget the fabulous Mughal jewellery that featured diamonds, emeralds, and pearls in 22 karat gold all by Chopard and Sabyasachi Heritage Jewellery. A very delicate yet striking ensemble that made her look like a dream on this special day. Two show-stopping dresses for a show-stopping bride!
