The pandemic bought the world to a standstill, the entertainment industry included. The movie business is one of the main industries that have been hit hard by the national lockdown. It forced many producers and actors to make the tough decision of releasing their movies on OTT platforms – Take Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bachchan‘s Gulabo Sitabo or Vidya Balan and Sanya Malhotra‘s Shakuntala Devi. Many more producers and filmmakers are considering online releases in such uncertain times.

But according to a report in Bollywood Hungama, theatres may open sometime in July. Reportedly, a senior cabinet minister had a virtual meeting with selected exhibitors in which all of them expressed how they’ve suffered over the past few months due to the lockdown. The minister apparently assured them that he will push the Ministery Of Home Affairs to open up theatres in July. But he advised them to ensure that all safety precautions and social distancing norms are being followed in all areas of the theatre. The exhibitors went on to promise that they will strictly follow all the rules.

In Mumbai, the Maharashtra government has allowed for shoots to happen as long as strict safety precautions are taken and with a number of other conditions. Many celebrities also took to thank the government for allowing shoots but also asked viewers to be patient so that they can start preparing for it. The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) a US organization also feels that 90% of theatres will resume functioning by July.

This is extremely good news for moviemakers who have been in a fix as to how and where they should release their movies. As for moviegoers, we will have to wait and see if people still find it safe enough to venture out into the theatres to watch movies after months of watching content at the tip of their fingers.
