Namit Das has been in the television and film industry for almost two decades now. And if his body of work is anything to go by, the actor has taken the road less travelled by experimenting with varied genres and platforms. Right from his television show Sumit Sambhaal Lega to his stint in films like Sui Dhaaga and Wake Up Sid, he has given us some memorable performances. Beaming with the success of his latest OTT series Aarya, it sure seems like he is onto some bigger and better things in the coming times.

On his birthday today, we thought of bringing to you lesser-known facts about Namit!

He’s the son of the veteran ghazal singer, Chandan Dass

Namit belongs to a family of musicians and singers and has been around music since his childhood. His father, Chandan Dass is a reputed ghazal singer, who was trained under the tutelage of Ustad Moosa Khan and Pandit Mani Prasad of Delhi and has has many renowned ghazal albums to his credit.

Namit is part of a music band

Yeah, we told you about the family he comes from. So not a surprise that Namit has partnered with the multi-instrumentalist, Anurag Shanker, for interesting music collaborations that fall under the ‘light classical’ style of music. Along with Shanker, Das composes and performs songs that are raw, simple, and moving. Their band often uploads covers of songs, and their quarantine covers have especially gained quite some popularity in recent times.

He is aboard Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding, the musical

Namit has experience in theatre from his early days and is still very much active in the medium, which he considers his alma mater. The actor is part of the Mira Nair‘s ‘Monsoon Wedding’ cast, and is also one of its music composers. The musical is about the stress, joy, gossip, and wonder surrounding the preparations of an extravagant marriage in India. This stage rendition by Nair was to hit the two most prestigious theatres in the UK, namely The Roundhouse and Leeds Playhouse. However, owing to the coronavirus pandemic, the musical has now been scheduled for 2021. Sounds like one play I would love to attend!

He has tried his hand in every platform there is!

Das has experimented with his craft and explored acting on every platform. This includes the big screen, theatres, digital series and TV shows. In the course of his 15-year long career, he has proven how he can adapt to any medium with such ease. The actor is on a digital series spree off late. And to his luck, that’s where all eyes are during these times! He has his web show, Mafia releasing today on his birthday, while Mira Nair’s, A Suitable Boy is awaiting digital release very soon. And when it comes to TV, the actor makes viewers chuckle as Sumit in Sumit Sambhal Lega, a sitcom that chronicles the life of a reckless and funny man, who has a joke for every situation.

Namit turned composer for Mira Nair’s A Suitable Boy, too!

The actor-singer donned the hat of a composer to create three songs for Mira Nair’s adaptation of A Suitable Boy. Das is yet to know which of the three songs will be finalised for the BBCOne series. Based on Mira Nair’s 2001 hit film, the new musical will play in the U.K. following its Berkeley Rep world premiere.

We cannot wait to see this film and listen to Namit’s tunes! Until then, wish you a happy birthday, Namit!
