Milan Digital Fashion Week: Day 1 Highlights

Nelly Wadia

Every year the glamour and thrill of a fashion week is one to look forward too. The models, the makeup, the clothes, the music and the latest in fashion to consume. But this year, fashion has had to be on their toes, given the pandemic, no more can we share space to enjoy fashion week the way we normally have. Rapid reinvention has led to these shows taking place online instead of in person. You can watch all the shows here.

Microsoft and Accenture teamed up to create a digital platform to lend support to Camera Nazionale Della Moda Italiana’s (CNMI) first-ever fashion week in Milan. This platform helps connect brands, designers and industry professionals to buyers, consumers and influencer’s world over. The platform also offers video conferences, chats and holograms. However, the platform is divided into 3 parts:

  • A hub for live streaming of the shows, virtual catwalks, roundtables and other industry events.
  • A virtual showroom that showcases digital catalogues and manages the ordering process.
  • And, an insights platform driven by data to source business insights from interaction levels with brands.

This new digitalized mechanism can help reduce fashion’s impact on the environment while making several processes more efficient. It will also ensure that design and selection of materials will follow a more digitized format of consumption making it more sustainable to fashion’s seasonal cycles. It is crucial to look at new technologies as an initiative towards a positive revolution, now more than ever. Milan fashion week is currently taking place from the 14th of July – 17th of July 2020.

Here’s a look at some shows from Day 1 at Milan Digital Fashion Week:

1) Prada

Prada’s show titled The Show That Never Happened had Miuccia Prada ask Terence Nance, Joanna Piotrowska, Martine Syms, Juergen Teller and Willy Vanderperre interpret her 2021 resort collection into 5 chapters. The first few chapters were haunting along with the music and effects whereas the last chapter had a somewhat happier disposition. The collection suggests different views or multiple views because I didn’t find anything nuanced about this particular show at fashion week. It was packed with black and white suits, some knits, stirrup leggings and black dresses. Pretty basic if I’m being honest.

2) Alberta Ferretti

Alberta Ferretti’s 2021 resort collection at Milan Fashion Week is a tribute to Italy. A virtual journey of its streets and squares. With Rome, Naples, Venice and Milan as the background to this collection. The show opens with a baby-pink, power suit paired with a sheer shirt with pocket detailing on the chest. The embellished, bow-front belt adds a touch of glamour to the whole look. Bright colours from orange, pinks and blues are spotted on this virtual runway. Flirty maxi-dresses with knife pleats and lace inserts made an appearance. Scarf prints, denim suits along with macramé and leather accessories.

3) Moschino

Moschino’s Spring Summer 2021 menswear collection is all about the revival of joy. The brand is accustomed to loud and eccentric styles kept it simple with this pre-collection. A male model posed against colourful backgrounds with contrasting geometric props. I loved the black polka-dotted denim jacket. The white sweater with alien and space motifs was another one of my favourites. I have a sneaky feeling that colour blocking may come back in a big way. I loved Mochino’s pastel colour blocking and graffiti-style co-ord sets.
