6 Fall Shoe Trends That Deserve All Your Attention

Kanak Devnani

How is half the year over already? Under all the lockdown and quarantine restrictions, the time has really flown by, amirite? Just as I was enjoying my summer purchases we’ve already inching our way towards the fall and winter season. With the season change usually comes a reshuffling of our closets including footwear. So today, we’re focusing our attention on some of the coolest footwear trends for FW’20 that we can’t wait to strut around in and see on our feeds once things go back to normal.

Who knew things would be like this and slow down so much when the FW’20 runway collections debuted back then. Some of the trends sort of work perfectly with our mindset at the moment and some make us wish we could hit the dance floor soon. Finally, its time when these collections hit the stores and are available to the masses. From fuzzy shoes to rainbow-coloured boots the fall shoe trends are especially perfect if you love a statement piece. As nostalgia reigns supreme, designers continue to take inspiration from the ’90s and ’80s but also included a heavy sprinkling of ’70s vibes. It truly is the season to let your shoes do the talking. With so many iconic shoe moments we’ve listed some key trends you should be keeping your eye on.

1. Furry & Fluffy

Since most of us are living in our slippers during the lockdown, the furry footwear trend is timed perfectly for the fall-winter season. These slippers inspired shoes will keep you cosy and comfortable all season long. From faux-fur heels to slides and shearling-lined mules, we saw some fun and wacky versions traipse down the runway in a few designer collections. Some form of this texture was seen on collections like Ashley Williams who had extra fuzzy sandals on models. Following up with pyjama inspired vibes was Marques’Almeida with furry slippers. Even J.W Anderson and Miu Miu had some interesting pumps with texture in the mix. Time to bring the indoor cosy vibes outdoors with these statement shoes that will surely keep your toes warm.

Style Tip: If you don’t want to make a bold statement opt for more subtle fuzzy slides to add some oomph and texture to your basic outfits this winter.

2. Ruch Straps

One of the more sneaky shoe trends of FW’20 collections, the ruched heel is one to definitely keep an eye out for. These scrunched styles were seen to dominate in a thick sandal strap form. This style takes the shoes to the next level and is a little bolder than your average heel. It can be easily worn for a multitude of occasions all year round. These cute shoes were upfront on Christian Siriano models with specifically three straps on all the slip-on heels. They were also spotted on Alejandra Alonso Rojas and Off-White runways. Eckhaus Latta even added a small twist with slingback heels strap being ruched from a separate colour to the shoe.

Style Tip: If you’re looking for a versatile option, try kitten heel pumps or slingbacks with ruching details that you can even wear to the office.

3. Bow Details

Cute and charming bows of all kinds were all over the model’s feet. Whether they were perfectly symmetrical, dainty or even larger-than-life, we really enjoyed the feminine whimsical aspect to this shoe trend alongside the otherwise quite subdued collections. Giambattista Valli was noticeable with pretty little pearl bows and demure black ribbons where in contrast Prabal Gurung had satin pastel heels with tiny bows. Bow details are also spotted on Marc Jacobs, Alberta Ferretti, and Brock Collection just to name a few. Even Gucci had mary-janes with bow and chain accents combined.

Style Tip: Go for a boy meets girl look and pair your cute shoes with loose slouchy bottoms and an oversized shirt.

4. Colourful Boots

Of course, you can’t compile a shoe list for winter without mentioning boots, can you? Boots of all kinds are upfront and centre as usual, including the ’70s inspired platforms which are making a major comeback. However, instead of the same old neutrals, we saw vibrant colours all around. From thigh-high boots to combat styles, designers brightened up with runways with sunny hues and bold solid shades. Thigh-high boots were seen at Victoria Beckham and Alexander McQueen in butter-soft leather. While latex and second-skin boots were all over the Saint Laurent models. Whatever the style, it’s time to give your black boots a break and refresh your winter wardrobe with a splash of colour.

Style Tip: Colourful boots are a great way to add colour to your usually neutral-hued outfits in the coming season. You can ease into this by starting off with some sky-blue boots to add a softer touch to your closet.

5. Chain Details

You can’t escape the chain or chain-link details, it’s a must-have for 2020. While this dominated SS’20 runways they were prevalent in FW’20 collections as well. Chain elements are very versatile and there were a ton of these embellishments on the runways. From silvery to gold to pearl detailing, all from delicate pumps to more grunge boots they were everywhere. Wrapped around the shoes they added a lot of colour and texture to neutrals depending on the thickness and placement. Heavy chains stood out at Simone Rocha, Burberry, Micheal Kors and Longchamp just to name a few. If you haven’t yet explored this shoe trend what are you waiting for! Its time to dive in.

Style Tip: Why not opt for a pair of blingy chain heels and pair it with an LBD or simple yet sexy black camisole dress and let your shoes do all the talking on your next night out.

6. Brogues

A lot of designers stayed away from very feminine heels and opted for menswear-inspired footwear. Brogues, oxfords and loafers are the few styles that really stand out. In the metallic, patent, slip-on or embossed, these shoes will get you near and far. The more masculine Brogues came in all types on interesting iterations on the runways and instantly make any fall-themed ensemble look sophisticated. Carolina Herrera opted for more metallic versions while Chloe, Awake Mode, Celine and Marc Jacobs also had intriguing sartorial twists to menswear-inspired shoes.

Style Tip: The most foolproof way to style brogues is to pair with other menswear-inspired garments as well. Try regular trousers, white button-up and an oversized blazer for a stylish on-trend look.
