Mindy Kaling is a woman who wears many hats; she’s a writer, producer, director, actor and stand-up comedian. Mindy has gained a huge fan following from her online portrayal of Kelly Kapoor on The Office. She’s even won a Primetime Emmy Award for her outstanding writing on the show. Kaling tapped into a larger audience when she wrote, produced and starred in Fox/Hulu comedy series The Mindy Project. The star has featured in many movies like Inside Out, Ocean’s 8, Late Night and many more. Mindy also has two New York Times best-selling memoirs under her belt, titled Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) and Why Not Me? Mindy Kaling is a powerhouse and pioneer for Indian women, as there aren’t too many Indian-American women on TV.

In 2020, she produced the Netflix series Never Have I Ever, a show that is partially based on Kaling’s real childhood story. The teenage drama/comedy is about an Indian-American high school student, played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. Who traverses through the ups and downs of being a brown skin girl and also the loss of a parent. However, I am most excited for the third instalment of Legally Blonde that Mindy is all set to co-write with Dan Goor. Mindy is also a mother to a baby girl and has chosen not to reveal the identity of the baby’s father. Mindy looks to be enjoying her lockdown time with her daughter and some experimentation with her fashion.

This is what Mindy had to say.

I find that fashion has helped me keep my mind off of obsessing online reading every headline about Covid-19. I still do have nights, where I wake up at 2 am to pee and stay up another 90 minutes reading scary think pieces on my phone (which are necessary and important, but not in the middle of the night!). So fashion keeps me happy and uses my mind in other ways. What’s your outlet during this time?

Scroll on to see some of Mindy’s super fun and summery quarantine looks:

1) Monochromatic party dress

What I love about Mindy most is her willingness to wear the brightest colours! She looks fantastic in this Iorane World hot pink, plunging v-neck, bodysuit with puff sleeves. The Alexander McQueen pencil skirt features big, abstract, floral prints and draws attention to her curvaceous body. She accessorised her look with dangly, diamante earrings, a furry, pink sling-bag from Shopbop and suede, Celine pink pointy pumps.

2) Drop-waist garden party dress

Drop waist dresses are tricky to work with especially if you have a buxom body but Mindy looks fantastic yet again. Her strappy, Tanya Taylor bright purple dress with tiny flowers spread out all-over looks great in her backyard. Which makes this so easy for me to imagine someone wearing this to a BBQ garden party. She paired her dress with a pair of Paloma Barcelo silver sandals, a Chloé sling bag and statement, strawberry earrings by Mercedes Salazar. How adorable are those earrings?

3) Pretty Woman inspired

Do ya’ll remember when Julia Roberts emerged all polished and fancy in a polka-dot dress with a hat? I mean does this outfit not look similar to her Pretty Woman ensemble? Either way, I am totally digging this Mara Hoffman look on Mindy. This ocher colour, midi-dress with white polka dots and a gathered neckline suit Mindy perfectly well. She accessorised her look with a straw summer hat, gold hoops, a tan bag with a beaded strap from Serpui. The highlight of this look though is those unsuspecting black and white from Tory Burch shoes that up the ante of the look. I imagine being at a 5-star resort in Mexico if I were ever to get my hands on this look.

4) Colour-blocked midi-dress

This might probably be my least favourite look of hers from the lot but she still looks cute as a button. Mindy nails the colour blocking trend like a pro with this orange, blue and white colour scheme. Her smocked, tiered, maxi dress is styled with a white elastic belt to give shape to this cotton number. The look is accessorised with a blue tribal necklace, gold hoops, tiny, printed blue bag by Tory Burch and suede, Jimmy Choo blue pumps.

5) Delicate crochet dress

We all know that crochet dresses can sometimes end up looking tacky. However, this gorgeous Altuzarra cream dress with orange piping really pops on Mindy’s complexion, not that it matters but dang, she looks like caramel goodness. She paired this look with a Sensi Studio round, straw bag, orange, criss-cross sandals from Swedish Hasbeens and a gold, chain-link necklace from Brinker & Eliza.

6) Perfect beach dress

I know you can only see that back of this dress, but if the back of it is this cute can you imagine the front?  This blue dress instantly transports me to Greece with the colours and the floral printed, straw sun hat from Amber Noon. The dress has a minimal black and white print with lace piping and hemline detailing. Mindy carries in her hand a pair of beige wedge espadrilles from Clergerie.

7) Animal print co-ord set

This is just a wow, party look. I can totes imagine myself eyeballing a girl who shows up in this look. Mindy’s tiger-print, green knit co-ord set by Victor Glemaud features a pencil skirt with a ruffled hemline and a spaghetti, crop-top with a thick waistband. She accessorised it with a vintage Chanel gold necklace, yellow Celine nano luggage tote bag and Marni platform sandals.

8) Striped outdoorsy pyjama set

Mindy makes a case for quarantine dressing by stepping out in these funky, striped pyjamas. And pulls a major fashionista move by carrying the Chanel yellow, quilted, lambskin flap bag. She styled this look with a pair of over-sized sunglasses and brown Ugg boots.

9) Spring colour edit

There’s something so Prada-esqué about this red and green combo. You’d think it borders on the Christmasy vibe but it really doesn’t with the way Mindy’s styled it. She wears a black and green, Bretton-striped knit over a leaf print shirt from Tory Burch and pairs it with a red skirt from A.L.C. She accessorised her look with a Fiona Kotur geometric design clutch and Christian Louboutin colour-block heels in red and pink.

10) Print-on-print co-ord set

The print-on-print trend can be a hard trend to sport especially if you’re clueless about what works for you. Truthfully, the key is to just wear whatever you wish to with confidence and even if the prints don’t work, you’ll still look epic. I love the way Mindy pairs this purple, floral shirt from Matthew Williamson with a blue floral skirt from French Connection and breaks the colour by carrying a white Chanel sling bag. The addition of metallic purple shoes from Casadei is a top-notch styling choice for this look.

11) Knife-pleated midi-skirt

Love how Mindy pairs this white tank top with diamond print against a colour-blocked red and pink knife-pleated skirt from Theory. Her accessories jazz this ensemble up even more than the use of colour and print. She accessorised with white dangly earrings and a white ring. A stunning Cartier watch and white shoes with a pink heart from Christian Louboutin. She rounded off her look with a statement Gucci black GG Marmont leather shoulder bag. Love how the hearts don’t look like over-kill!
