I enjoy a good bold and vivid makeup look but this year seemed to be all about more subtle and toned down makeup. Where we did see some fun trends emerge, like graphic liners, more natural-looking glam and no-makeup makeup has only risen in popularity. Usually when one talks about a natural makeup looks we instantly think of a simple look with minimal products. However, natural makeup now also means makeup that’s more low-key but looks flawless. The aim here is to enhance your natural features in an almost undetectable way. It’s generally a middle ground between a no-makeup look and overtly glamorous statement makeup—e.g dark smokey eyes or bold looks. Having said that, natural-looking makeup does require some skill and the use of right products create a flawless base that makes you look like your glowing from within.
In this case, it does take some work to look effortless but most professional makeup artists would agree the key here is to go in with a light touch. Slowly build light layers of product and blend, blend, blend and blend for a seamless look— did I say blend enough times? However, if you don’t have the keen eye of a makeup artist it can be tough to know what to apply and what not to. TBH one advice that helped me out was to really get to know the structure of your face and use products that work best on your skin.
Makeup can be very personal but most importantly always go in with a vision. In this case, it helps to have a visual for the kind of makeup style or vibe your aiming for. From Kim Kardashian‘s more glamourous take on natural makeup to Selena Gomez’s fresh face, we’ve listed some gorgeous celeb looks to inspire your creativity.
With the launch of Selena’s new makeup line Rare Beauty, we got to see some lovely fresh-faced looks she posted on her Instagram. A lot of them were more natural and minimal looks with her including products from her line. This peachy look is one of my favourites. The focus here is on her flushed cheeks and fuller lips in the same peachy shade. She’s kept the entire look minimal with a light foundation base, a wash of brown over her lids for some definition and light layers of mascara. A look that’s super easy for anyone to recreate, try using a multi-use face stick that you can use both on your cheeks and lips. This will allow you to use even fewer products for quick and easy makeup application.
Kim’s makeup has always been on the more glamourous side and her more natural looks follow the same vein. So if you enjoy a natural look with full coverage this is the one for you. Lately, she’s been a fan of more neutral makeup choices with bronzed skin and neutral tones. The strongest part of her makeup is her eyes which she’s defined with taupe-brown shades and soft cat-eye at the outer corner. Don’t forget the nude lipstick and gloss combo to complete the look. When trying out this look at home remember your bronzer and contour can double up as eyeshadow as well.
When you perfect your base makeup it can look like you barely have any makeup but gives you a flawless finish. One of my favourite looks from Ananya, this is the very definition of natural-looking makeup. Her skin is glowing with light reflecting off the shimmer wash on her eyes and glossy lips. I really like the subtle feline flick on the outside corner of each eye. The thin brown liner adds definition to the eyelashes without being too strong like a standard black liner would have. For easier application use a cream eyeliner or brown eyeshadow with an angled brush instead of a liquid formula. This is a more forgiving technique which makes it easier to fix any mistakes.
Alia is the queen of rocking soft glam and barely-there makeup looks. While she always looking fresh-faced with amazing skin, this soft monochromatic pink look instantly had me following in love. The sweep of soft pink hues over her eyes, cheeks and lips gives the right amount of colour to her skin. A romantic look that’s easily recreated without overthinking it too much. If you want a glowy finish to your look, remember to highlight areas of your face where the light naturally hits.
Masaba and her mother Neena Gupta are the perfect examples of the no-makeup makeup look here. With the mother and daughter duo, the focus is all about creating an impeccable base. They both have very similar looks with Masaba opting for a soft pink shade and alternatively Neena with a nude lip. While they’ve kept their eyes simple with a subtle wash they’ve made sure to contour and highlight their face to create some definition. They look effortlessly beautiful and graceful for their promotional appearances.
No matter your age the key to amazing natural looks starts with great skin. Always remember to keep your skin hydrated. Prep and prime with a hydrating radiant primer to create a smooth canvas to work with. This way you’ll automatically apply less makeup and your foundation won’t go on thick or cakey.
