The collaboration between Alia Bhatt and Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been one that many of us have been waiting for. While the director-actress duo was going to be working on Inshallah along with Salman Khan, the project had to be shelved due to some differences between SLB and Salman. But soon after Gangubai Kathiawadi was announced with Alia as the lead. The movie went on floors in December 2019 but the shooting came to a halt in March due to the pandemic. Now, after more than six months, Alia has gone back to the sets to start shooting.

A Mid-Day report suggested that the actress has been reporting to sets at 7 PM from 1st October and has been shooting into the wee hours of the night. While the makers had to pull down parts of the set during the pandemic, a section of Kamathipura set was still left untouched and that’s where SLB has been shooting.

A 50 member team has been assembled to finish off the scenes with Alia. Actor and choreographer Shantanu Maheshwari has also been roped in for the project to play Alia’s love interest in the film. He has already shot for one song and is yet to shoot for two more.

For those unaware, Gangubai Kathiawadi is based on a chapter from Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens Of Mumbai. The story revolves around a girl sold into prostitution by her boyfriend and how she becomes the madam of a brothel in Kamathipura.
