The world can be a hard, terrible and cruel place. Your job’s getting monotonous, your crush is ghosting you, season 2 of The Society got cancelled and the pandemic is still going strong. Amidst all this chaos we tend to go crazy. We become balls of stress and sometimes all we really need is a pick-me-up. All we need is to curl up in a blanket, grab some chocolate and lose ourselves in a in a classic feel-good movie. We all have that one movie (or movies) that instantly make us feel better even if we watch it for ten minutes or for the 1000th time. We recently had a conversation on Girl Tribe by MissMalini on movies that are like comfort blankets, and here are some of the movies that made the cut:

6 Movies For When You Really Need A Pick-Me-Up

1. Jab We Met

The classic Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan movie won the nation’s heart upon release. It completely romanticised the idea of “opposites attract” in the most comical and heart-warming way possible. We all wanted to hop onto a train to find our very own “angry man”, stay at a shady motel with him, take a road trip with him, get involved in extremely complicated lies, almost lose him but eventually spend the rest of our life with him. Jab We Met was full of hilarious scenes and witty one-liners and will always be the best pick-me-up movie!

2. Notting Hill

Young Hugh Grant as a witty, romantic and well-read bookstore owner? Yes please! Notting Hill was straight out of a fairy tale with it’s old British charms, pastel coloured houses and the perfect love story. It is the perfect remedy for when you’re feeling low because there is no mood so foul or day so terrible that a young Hugh Grant cannot fix. It’s a scientific fact!

3. Eat Pray Love

Julia Roberts going on a solo trip across countries to find herself and her spirituality was iconic. It made all of us want to empty out our savings and become globetrotters. Eat Pray Love is the ultimate pick-me-up movie and watching it for a few minutes is guaranteed to put you in a better mood!

4. Andaz Apna Apna

It’s over-the-top, way too slapstick, very extra, absolutely ridiculous, not very feminist and extremely entertaining. The classic Salman Khan and Aamir Khan duo making fools of themselves will turn your frown upside down (I had to use this line while writing about this movie, sorry not sorry). It will have you in splits within minutes and if laughing gives you abs, you will emerge with an 8-pack for sure.

5. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

The millenial favourite Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani can we re-watched over and over again without an ounce of boredom. Everything about the movie right from the Manali trek, Aditi‘s giant wedding, Naina‘s heartbreak (both times), extreme alcoholism and every single shot of Bunny (literally every single one) will make you feel good, warm and cozy. Whether you watch it for Instagram captions or to drool over Aditya Roy Kapoor, YJHD is the best pick-me-up to every exist.

6. Shrek

Need I really explain this? Do I really need to tell you why Shrek is not only the best pick-me-up but also possibly the greatest movie to ever exist? Do I really need to? Really?
