Anyone who knows me knows my first love is lipsticks. Lip glosses, lip balms, liquid lipsticks, lip tints you name it, I love them all. I feel that the power and impact of great lipstick colour are second to none. Whether you’re doing a more natural look or glammed up to the heavens, fabulous lip colour can transform your entire look and vibe. I especially love a strong lip on more minimal and lazy makeup days where everything except my lips is paired back to make a statement.

You’ll usually find me wearing a myriad of colours on a daily regardless of the season. Bright pinks, vibrant reds, burgundy and deep browns I love rocking them all. In fact, you can tell a lot about my mood from the lipstick shade I’m wearing. So you can imagine I’ve tried my share of lipsticks over the years. Some have been left behind and few create a permanent place in my makeup drawer until something better comes along to dethrone it. That said my friends and cousins are always asking me for my recommendations and current favourites. With that in mind, I’ve listed my current top 6 lipsticks that never fail me and have continued to repurchase time and time again.

1. Smashbox Cosmetics, Always On Cream to Matte Lipstick in Bawse

I can’t explain how much I love cool-toned reds and this matte lipstick is such a dream, literally confidence in a tube. It’s creamy, never drags on the lips but dries down super matte and is mostly transfer-proof plus the colour stays true to tone. I had the same shade in the liquid cream formula but I love this matte bullet version way more.

2. Mac, Satin Lipstick in Twig

Fun fact this was one of the first lipsticks I ever bought and one of my most used ones to date. It’s a warm-toned, medium-dark mauve with a satin finish. That has rich, opaque pigmentation in a single layer and is super comfortable on the lips. This literally is the go-to lipstick I reach for the most when I can’t make up my mind.

3. Huda Beauty, Liquid Matte Lipstick in Venus

Every time I wear this shade I get a ton of compliments and people asking me which lipstick I’m wearing. The shade Venus is one of the only few peachy nudes that work on me. The consistency is quite liquidy but is very pigmented and offers full coverage in a single swipe. I love it because it doesn’t cling to any dry patches and always looks even. Huda’s liquid mattes smell weirdly delicious almost like cake batter, I don’t like fragrances in my makeup but I don’t mind the scent on these.

4. Soap & Glory, Sexy Mother Pucker Lipstick in Berrykissable

More often than not I have this in my purse with a backup lying in my drawers. It’s a beautiful rosy berry shade that goes with almost any makeup look I wear. If you have dry lips like me this is a great hydrating matte formula that won’t make your lips feel like the Sahara desert. Another one that gets tons of compliments so much so I had to buy a new one cause my mother stole my original tube.

5. Huda Beauty, Liquid Matte Lipstick in Spice Girl

The effect this lipstick gives after putting it on is amazing with a solid matte finish. This cool, dark brown lippie always has me seeing hearts. I love a good 90s grunge style moment and it encompasses all that with one swipe.

6. MAC, Semi-Matte Lipstick in Lady Danger

If you couldn’t tell I still adore the OG cult favourite MAC lipsticks but Lady Danger is a new entry to my list. A little bit brighter and more orange than your usual red it sold me the minute I tried it on. I was hesitant at first thinking I’d look like a clown but it’s absolutely stunning especially in the summers. I just keep the rest of my makeup subtle when I bring out this baby.
