One of the most anticipated films of the year, The Big Bull, was announced by the makers last year, and since then, I was super excited for it to premiere on Disney+ Hotstar. For the unversed, The Big Bull is a film that is loosely based on the life and times of the big time, news-making stock market broker — Harshad Mehta. It has Abhishek Bachchan essaying his role. Directed by Kookie Gulati, the film also stars Sohum Shah, Supriya Pathak Shah, Ileana D’ Cruz, Nikita Dutta, Samir Soni, Saurabh Shukla and Mahesh Manjrekar among others.

The film is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar from today and here’s why you should catch this film, if you haven’t already:

Abhishek Bachchan

Abhishek Bachchan is an actor who gets into the skin of a character when he takes up any huge role, and this one is no different. Abhishek, as the Big Bull of the stock market, Hemant Shah, has us watching totally invested in his ride to the top (and all the other ups and downs on the way). Abhishek, with his body language, dialect, and that all-knowing smirk, sure does capture the essence of the money-hungry and ambitious stock market broker and manages to keep us hooked to his tale, which is not easy given it lingers over such a grey zone.

Sohum Shah

Sohum plays Viren Shah, Hemant’s younger brother who is always shadowing him and being the pillar Hemant falls on when he is in trouble. He is the voice of reason behind every move of Hemant and Sohum plays the character with great nuance and earnesty.

You get a basic idea of what goes on behind the scenes at the share market

For someone like me, who doesn’t have much of an idea about how the stock market functions in a larger level, this film sheds light on how some people like Abhishek’s character, Hemant Shah, made the money they made in the early 90s. The film shows the people, family and emotions behind all the money and success – and all the not-so-happy consequences they face because of it. Ileana’s part, as a financial journalist called Meera, narrates this whole tale in the film, and has also put up a good performance.

The iconic story of ‘The Big Bull’ is put forth well by earnest performances by the entire cast. If you haven’t watched the film yet, this sure can be a great weekend watch!
