Self-love is a journey less travelled because it doesn’t come easy. In a world where everything is about how you look and dress, it can be hard to embrace oneself. We often feel angry at our bodies for not looking the way we want it to or respond the way we want it to. I for one struggle with PCOs and a bad knee so it’s an uphill climb for me to stay in the shape I like. Because my weight tends to fluctuate and I do have many days where I just can’t find the will to love my body.

However, it helps me remind myself about all the good things my body has done for me. It has kept me alive during a pandemic and for that, in itself, I need to love it exactly for what it is. No one’s perforce and we all have our own insecurities, so I’m here to give you a few reasons to love yourself.

Here are a few important reasons why you should love your body:

1) Your body makes you unique.

No one on this planet looks like you. So by that standard, you are literally one of a kind! Your difference is your strength and there’s not much point in wasting time thinking about it when you could be out there frying bigger fish. The truth is your life won’t look any different if your body is a little different. Everyone that loves you will continue to love you no matter how much you weigh.

2) It keeps you alive.

Your body has great healing power and thus keeps you alive. And as long as you’re healthy your body will heal no matter what. So focus on doing the things you need to do to stay healthy and try to keep it that way. This also leads us to; healthy body, a healthy mind. Remember your body is also connected to your mind.

3) It is very resilient.

The human body is very tough and will/can bounce back from physical trauma. It allows you to do many amazing things. We need to remember what our bodies do for us on a daily basis. This could be cooking, walking, breathing, basically all the necessary actions for your body to function. All of these small things keep you alive and kicking. Apart from keeping you alive, it also allows you to chase your dreams and accomplish them too.

4) You are beautiful.

Don’t forget how far you’ve come in life thanks to your body. Don’t forget the many experiences you’ve had because of it. Think about your accomplishments and the people that love, respect and cherish you. Your life is beautiful and so are you. Period.

5) Life is too short.

Our life span is too short to spend it worrying about how others perceive us or whether we’re fitting in. By investing your time and energy in things that really matter you give yourself more opportunity to enjoy your life to the fullest. It’s really quite simple, when we hear another person speak in negative tones about them; we jump to their defense and treat them with kindness. So, it shouldn’t be so hard to respond with the same intensity of kindness to oneself. Ultimately, it is your body and how you feel about your body is entirely up to you. No one has the power to make you feel otherwise until you allow them to bother you.
