We’re no strangers to hair trends, in fact, we probably spend way too much time scrolling through Instagram to see what’s taking off and what’s big enough to finally make its way from TikTok to Instagram. Endlessly scrolling through we’ve noticed there have been some unexpected trends taking off. While some aren’t quite brand new, a few we really did not see coming. Whether it’s a blast from the past or fun low-maintenance hairstyles there’s an endless choice of inspiration going around to help amp up our hair game. You best believe we’ve already bookmarked them to try out at the next occasion, Zoom party or even just to the grocery store.

1. The Farrah Fawcett Flip

Initially going immensely viral on TikTok this ‘70s inspired hairdo finally made its way to Instagram users and fashionistas. Inspired by the legendary Hollywood actress, this iconic hairstyle can be achieved using a curler or flat iron and a brush before shaking the brushed curls out until your hair falls into a voluminous, feathery style. It really is all about turning up the volume right now.

2. Mermaid Waves

Primed to be one of the bigger hairstyles trends of the year these beachy waves have been slowly picking up steam and it’s easy to see why. Effortless and flirty this crimped hairstyle looks good on everyone and on every hair length.

3. Zigzag Parts

While a few months ago Gen Z-ers and Millenials were arguing over if side parts or middle parts were better in came the zigzag part. Bella Hadid brought back this trend wearing it with a spiky updo. If you were a teenager in the early 2000s, chances are you tried a zigzag part to varying success. Now once again everyone has been replicating this modern zigzag part with the bun to their best abilities.

4. Bubble braids

Also known as banded or plait ponytails, bubble braids are here to upgrade your regular ponytails or pigtails. They give you the best of both worlds by being low maintenance with enough of a modern upgrade to wear for just about any occasion. Done by creating mini fluffed sections that mimic bubbles and decorating them with hair ties or rubber bands, whether you opt for a high pony, low pigtails or a half-up ‘do, this is a simple yet fun style to try out.

5. Heatless curls

The trend of heatless curls continues to carry on this year. While velcro curlers were a thing for a moment, girls out here are still using socks, robe belts, pantyhose, and all sorts of other items you’d never classify as hair stylers to curl their hair. The result? Loose beachy curls that will make you give up your curling iron. Personally, we love the original tutorial Celebrity hairstylist Justine Marjan shared last year that’s still pretty effective. BTW, we recommend trying this hack on damp hair for best results.

6. Flipped ponytail

Another blast of the past we’ve already seen celebs showing off this look, and now it’s resurfacing on the social platform as a 2021 trend. Once a staple hairstyle in the ’60s, and it made a huge comeback this past spring. Whether it’s paired with a ponytail, half-up half-down, all down with a side or middle part, it’s such a fun way to spice up a sleek straight look. Plus is super flattering on everyone.
