When it comes to skincare, the question that frequently gets asked, even way more that “Which retinol product should I use?” is, “Where should I start?“.  And while skincare can be hella complicated, it can also be hella basic! So, I’m gonna share with you 3 MVPs everyone (and I mean, everyone) needs when starting out with skincare.

A Cleanser

Why: A cleanser helps remove all the dirt, grime and sweat from the face which is just honestly as basic as hygine gets… ‘Ya feel? Cleansers also help dissolve the excess oils and products that get trapped within the layers of the skin. And the worst part is sleeping on all that makeup and sunscreen from the day… Now you’ve heard this before, but always wash your face before bed.

To be used: 1-2 times a day.

A Moisturiser

Why: Moisturiser helps prevent wrinkles and fine lines, soothes any redness and helps protect the barrier of your skin from environmental damage. Kinda like how you wear sunglasses to see when it’s sunny outside.

To be used: Twice a day.

Sunscreen

Why: It’s the tale as old as time, sunscreen is a must in order to prevent skin cancerm fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots, hyperpigmentation and so on… See only bad things come from not wearing sunscreen.

To be used: 5-10 minutes before stepping out the door every morning.

Now that you are familiar with the basics, here are a few other general guidelines:

  1. Start with these 3 golden geese and then build from here.
  2. Do your research before buying products and patch test it.
  3. Don’t buy anything you can’t replish easily (especially if it works for you).
  4. Read the text on the product—the instructions, expiration date, ingredients etc.
