Barkha Chawla

We’ve made this special troubleshooting guide for our new mums! Motherhood is the hardest job and nothing can prepare you for it, but also the job you’ll love the most! Read through to have a smooth, goof-proof first couple of months with your newborn

1. Consulted Dr Google

The first couple of weeks are hard and there are many firsts, it sometimes leaves you wondering if everything is ‘normal’ with your baby. And we turn to Google to find instant answers. It’s always better to consult your paediatrician rather than look for answers on Google.

2. Giving Over-Stimulating Toys

We’ve all been there! We’ve all woken up to loud musical toys. Sometimes even the colours are too bright for our little ones. It’s better to opt for toys made out of natural wood and toys that use organic colours. When you are looking to buy toys always remember, less is more.

3. Neglecting Your Partner

A lot of times we get so busy with the arrival of our little ones that in between diaper changes, feeding schedules, catching up on sleep, we often tend to neglect our partner. Try to spend some time with your spouse to feel connected again. Have a date night once in a while and go for long drives and reconnect.

4. Baby Talks

It’s normal to talk to your baby in a high pitch tone and totally euphoric to hear your baby cooing and blabbering. But our little ones process language earlier than we expect and it’s advisable to talk in a normal tone but use short sentences and have a very expressive face, this should garner your little ones attention for quite some time.

5. Comparing Your Baby Other’s

It’s very easy to go down this rabbit hole, before you start spiralling in these thoughts it’s good to know that all babies are different and as far as your paediatrician is not concerned there is nothing to worry about. Every baby tackles milestones at its own pace.

6. Not Asking For Help

It’s quite easy to feel overwhelmed in the initial days after your delivery. You should ask for help whenever you feel the need. If you want to take a nap and want someone to watch the baby, just ask them. This will help you recover faster and keep you relaxed around the baby when they’re cranky.

7. Not Seeking Adult Conversations

After the delivery, it’s very difficult to even get up and walk yourself to the loo, leave alone trying to make connections with your friends and family. Once your doctor has given you the green signal to move around, you should consider going out for a coffee or having a friend over. You will feel exhausted and it’s natural to feel so, but remember stepping will lift up your spirits.

8. Not Packing A Change Of Clothes For Yourself

Little babies have a lot of accidents, most of which include poop, pee, and spit ups. It’s possible that some of the spit-ups happen on your clothes. You must carry an extra top for yourself along with the baby’s change of clothes.

9. Not Trusting Your Gut

Nobody will know your baby better than you do. Rather than accepting unsolicited advice, it’s better to rely on your gut feeling. Not every time your baby cries it’s going to be because they’re hungry, trust your mom instinct and do what you feel is right. Deep down you know what the best is for your child.

10. Trying To Lose Pregnancy weight Too Quickly

Your body just made, nourished, and pushed out an entire human being. It definitely won’t go back to looking like it used to pre-pregnancy in just a couple of weeks. You need to trust the process and take it one day at a time. Respect the needs of your body and don’t follow any crash diets while you’re still breastfeeding your baby.
