There is a lot that we still need to know and learn about lubrication. Most people are unaware of the usage of lubrication and are also not very open to using it. But over time, with the evolving needs and a broader understanding of pleasure, it is overriding to understand what can make sex extremely pleasurable, safe and fun.

Introduction To Lubrication

During intercourse, the vaginas naturally secret lubrication to reduce friction to facilitate any kind of sexual activity. But sometimes, the lubrication secreted by your vagina may not be enough to kill the soreness and irritation. That is when the use of artificial lubrication comes into play. Artificial lubricants are of different types, textures and flavours to suit the person’s preference. Vaginas have a moist tissue which makes the area wet and eventually makes sex more pleasurable. But it is extremely normal for healthy vaginas as well to not produce enough lubrication for intercourse. In such cases, store-bought lubricants can come to your rescue.

Vaginal Lubricants usually provide moisture for a short period of time to enjoy sexual activity. There are several types of lubricants available in the market. Some of them are:

1) Water Based Lubricant

Water-based products containing glycerin are very easily available but one must avoid products with glycerin in case the vagina is very prone to yeast infections.

2) Oil Based Lubricant

Oil-based lubricants are available in every household. Products like baby oil, petroleum jelly and many other oil-based products can be utilised. These products are usually edible and safe. Petroleum Jelly has proven to be a great lubricant but it often causes irritation around the vulva making it a risky pick.

3) Silicone Based Lubricant

Silicone-based lubricants prove to be very useful for people who experience extreme vaginal dryness and have a history of experiencing pain during intercourse. Usage of silicone-based products can be extremely messy and should not be used with sex toys.

4) Vaginal Moisturisers

People often use moisturisers to increase the lubrication of the vagina. Coconut oil is very effective and moisturises all parts of the body. There has been no study to prove its benefits for the vaginal area but works brilliantly. One thing to keep in mind when using Coconut based lubricants is to avoid the usage of latex condoms, it causes a tear, making the condom almost ineffective.

How To Use A Lubricant?

When buying lubricant from a store, check the packaging for the instructions to use and then use it accordingly. One must also try and reach out to their gynaecologists before trying out something to avoid the risk of infection, soreness or irritation. It is always advisable to start with a pea-sized amount of the product to see if it’s working for the vaginal area. In case of any allergy, or irritation, discontinue usage of the product and consult a doctor. Your vulva or vaginal area is extremely sensitive, hence you should be very careful of what product you use there. One must also try and avoid flavoured lubricants since they are known to cause pain, irritation and soreness.

Commercial lubricants are safe for most people. However, as with any healthcare product, they present some risks, including:

  • Allergic Reactions
  • Skin Irritation
  • Yeast Infections
  • Interfering With Fertility
  • Drying Up Quickly, Requiring Frequent Reapplication
