Penn Masala Releases Their New Album And We Can’t Wait To Vibe To It

Mitisha Mavani

Founded at the University of Pennsylvania in 1996, Penn Masala has successfully
pioneered South Asian a cappella in the United States. Penn Masala was born with the
desire to create music that traversed traditional cultural boundaries and captured the
experience of growing up with competing Eastern and Western cultures.

Penn Masala At University of Pennsylvania

As the first group in the world to bring the sounds of the Indian subcontinent to a cappella, we’ve
consistently been at the forefront of South Asian-Western fusion. Their music has grown to
attract fans from all backgrounds, and a wide range of cultures, in turn, has influenced them.

Penn Masala Streams

Over the past 26 years, we have released eleven full-length studio albums and an EP; the
group has also written, arranged, and produced several original compositions. In addition
to performing sold-out shows at various universities across the United States each
semester, we have performed internationally in the United Kingdom, Canada, and India.

In both the United States and abroad, Penn Masala has performed at a range of events,
from the White House’s Diwali Celebration to the Indian International Film Academy
Awards in Tampa.

Penn Masala

Within India, Penn Masala has toured extensively over the past 10
years, including performances at the Star Screen Awards and the Zee Music Awards,
sharing the stage with artists like A.R Rahman, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Arijit Singh,
and collaborating with established singers including Benny Dayal, Jonita Gandhi, and
Vishal Dadlani. Furthermore, we have had the honor to perform for a number of
significant figures including Mukesh Ambani, Sachin Tendulkar, Lakshmi Mittal,
Anderson Cooper, Ban-Ki-Moon, and President Barack Obama.

They were featured in the comedy film American Desi and in the major motion picture Pitch Perfect 2.

They are finally after a long wait presenting Midnight Oil.
Midnight Oil was started in February 2020, almost immediately after the
completion of Musafir, with the arrangements of Taare Zameen Par / Paradise
and Om Shanti Om / September
.

The next couple of years brought a challenge unlike any the group has faced in its time, forcing the group to find new methods to practice, arrange, record and produce their music virtually.
Midnight Oil is the story of the group’s journey through the pandemic, both from that production standpoint and their musical identity.

From My Future / Yeh Dooriyan / Kalank, which expressed their melancholy hopefulness during
quarantine, to Hazy, a celebration of all that they have regained over the past
year, each track on this album captures the group at a different stage of the
long road back to an in-person world, as they grew together and found the
music they were looking for.

They have a list of songs which are listed below as follows:

Late Night Drive (Intro)
