I have been a great admirer of Shefali Shah ’s work from the time I saw her on screen. Be it Hasratein, Satya, Delhi Crime, I have watched her grow as an actor with each project. And now, the Jalsa actress is back again with Darlings which also co-stars Alia Bhatt and Vijay Varma. I was hooked to the trailer of the film because of its interesting storyline. In an exclusive conversation with team Miss Malini, Shefali opens up being directed by female directors,

Here are the excerpts from the interview:

On working with female directors…

I have worked with many women directors, from Mira Nair, to Zoya Akhtar to Aparna Sen. I don’t think it has anything to do with gender. It is about an individual and their sensitivity and sensibility.

On suggesting changes in the script…

I have had that freedom when I did Satya or Monsoon Wedding. Again, it depends on the individual (directors). There are certain people who are not open to feedback at all. They are very staunch about the things they want. I think we understand the directors who are sensitive, sensible, intelligent and creative. I feel filmmaking is a collaborative process. It is not an individual process. What is written on paper could be brilliant, but if it is misinterpreted, it could go wrong. I believe it is one person who has an overall view. A director has to see what suggestions to keep and what to let go. But I can’t suggest changes because I can’t visualize a film.

On playing a character that took a toll on her…

I become that character, every role exhausts me, consumes me and satiates me. It empties me whether it is Vartika from Delhi Crime or Samshu from Darlings or Ruksana from Jalsa. They are not easy people. I want to be completely consumed, drained, exhausted by the character I play and I am very happy like that.
