The Indian celebrities may be having a Gala time on the red carpet of the 76th Cannes Film Festival. But there are more ways that Indians are making a mark at this prestigious festival. There are four films this year that are going to be screened at the Cannes and you must make a note of these. From Kennedy by Anurag Kashyap to Kanu Behl’s Agra, here are Indian films that will be screened at Cannes this year.

1. Kennedy

Anurag Kashyap’s Kennedy is one of the films premiering at Cannes and stars Rahul Bhat, Sunny Leone and Abhilash Thapliyal. The film is to be screened under the Midnight Screening Section. The plot revolves around an insomniac cop who is presumed to be dead but is operating secretly for the corrupt system and on the lookout for redemption.

2. Agra

The film is directed by Kanu Behl and will be screened under the Directors’ Fortnight Section. The film is also written by Kanu and stars the Aashiqui actor – Rahul Roy in the lead. The film explores the sexual dynamics in a family and the sexual repression caused due to the lack of space at home. It holds up a mirror to the society and how our spaces affect our social dynamics.

3. Ishanou

Directed by Aribam Syam Sharma, this Manipuri classic film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in the Classic Section. The name translates to ‘The Chose One’ which was first aired on Doordarshan in 1990 and at Cannes in 1991. The film revolves around the tale of a woman who abandons her family to answer a spiritual calling. The screening is said to have left the audience in tears.

4. Nehemich

Yudhajit Basu’s film, tells us the story of a woman from a nomadic tribe, who is banished to a hut as she is menstruating. The story is set against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic and shows us how menstruating women are often isolated from society during that time of the month. The film also weaves in the plot of how she one-day dreams of eloping with her lover. The film is set to be screened in the La Cinef section of the Cannes Festival.
