This rescue thriller was based on a true story, on the life of Jaswant Singh, who saved the lives of 65 miners stuck in a coal mine. The actor gained a lot of praise for his character in the film. Akshay Kumar explicitly admitted to not having promoted Mission Raniganj as much as he did promotions for films like Selfiee. According to an said despite the promotions the film seemed to not have worked. he added saying that he wants his content-driven films to work on word of mouth mainly. He gave an example of how he did not promote OMG 2 and it still worked all due to word of mouth by his audience. He explained his statement saying that if he goes on to promote a film, it may seem like it is his job and people may take it for granted, but if they hear about a film from someone, they are more likely to give it a watch.
