In a groundbreaking moment for Indian cinema, acclaimed filmmaker Zoya Akhtar has made history by becoming the first-ever Indian director to be invited onto the esteemed ‘The Daily Show.’ This milestone achievement not only reflects the global recognition of Indian cinema but also highlights the talent and creativity that Zoya Akhtar brings to the industry. During her appearance, Zoya took the opportunity to discuss her latest cinematic venture, ‘The Archies,’ offering a glimpse into the world of her innovative storytelling.

She spoke about how Archies which is fundamentally American, was such a big aspect of urban Indian kids growing up. More so, she explained her decision to adapt The Archies for the global audience, its nostalgic appeal and her desire to return to innocence. She also spoke about how it touched upon topics like LGBTQIA+ considering it has been now decriminalised in India. She also added saying how she felt fortunate to be part of the film fraternity and for being an individual with the power of storytelling.

In Zoya’s words,

It’s crazy that something so fundamentally American was also fundamentally a part of an Indian urban kid’s childhood. Archies was one of the few things that everybody read, and it was a portal to this country. I just couldn’t say no. It was also like something to go back to, a ‘less is more’ time. I think I’m lucky to be a part of a community that can affect some kind of evolution or change and represent and be there and say how I feel.
