In a reassuring turn of events, Vantara, one of India’s top wildlife rescue and rehab organizations, has come out in its full support for the safe return of elephant Mahadevi, popularly referred to as Madhuri, to the Jain Math at Kolhapur. This is a big relief to many in Maharashtra, particularly the Jain community, for whom Madhuri means a great deal spiritually and emotionally.
Earlier this week, senior officials from Vantara met in Mumbai with government representatives and leaders of the Jain Math to discuss the way forward. During the meeting, Vantara clarified that their involvement in Madhuri’s relocation had been strictly under the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court and the Hon’ble Bombay High Court. At no point did the organization independently attempt to take custody of the elephant or interfere with religious sentiments.
The conversation was marked by mutual respect, understanding, and a shared goal of ensuring Madhuri’s well-being while honoring the cultural and spiritual sentiments of the people of Kolhapur.
Respect for Religious Sentiment
Vantara, in its official release, recognized the fact that Madhuri is not only an elephant but also a sacred member of religious life at the Jain Math. She has been integrated into the spiritual and daily life of the community for decades. The organization exhibited deep insight into the devotees and explained that it had never meant to disrupt these practices.
They once again reiterated to everyone that their role was only to provide care and temporary shelter to Madhuri as ordered by the courts. Any notion that Vantara acted independently was incorrect, as they were simply fulfilling their responsibility as a legally recognized animal care facility.
A Positive Path Forward
What stands out in Vantara’s approach is its willingness to move forward with compassion and cooperation. The organization has expressed its complete support for the petition being filed by the Maharashtra Government and Jain Math in the Supreme Court, requesting Madhuri’s return to Kolhapur. This gesture has been widely appreciated, including by Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who confirmed the good news via social media.
But Vantara has gone a step further.
They have offered to help build a dedicated satellite rehabilitation center for Madhuri near Nandani Math in Kolhapur. Such a center would be developed in consultation with the Jain Math and the Maharashtra Forest Department so that it serves the physical requirements of Madhuri as well as the emotional needs of people.
World-Class Care, Rooted in Respect
The envisioned rehabilitation center is not just symbolic, but it will also be a cutting-edge facility dedicated to providing Madhuri with health and happiness. Some of the features planned for include:
• A muscle and joint relief hydrotherapy pond
• An extensive aquatic body for swimming and natural movement range
• Physical recovery laser therapy suite
• Covered night hiding places for convenience and security
• A sand pit for environmental stimulation and natural behaviors
• Chain-free enclosures for free movement
• 24/7 veterinary care with a full clinic
• Rubberized floor and soft sand mounds to support arthritis and foot issues
These traits reflect commitment to the highest quality elephant care, not just from a medical standpoint, but also emotional, spiritual, and cultural well-being as well.
Looking Ahead
At its core, this is a story about empathy, respect for one another, and love not just for Madhuri, but for the principles that unite communities. Whether it’s a spiritual bond, a dedication to animal rights, or a need for peaceful resolution, both sides have demonstrated the desire to work together towards a common goal.
Now that we await the orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court, there is also something in the air: hope. And with organizations like Vantara standing in support, the journey ahead promises to be one guided by unity, care, and compassion.
