After the announcement of Sikandar, the first-ever collaboration between Salman Khan and acclaimed filmmaker AR Murugadoss, expectations ran high. However, the film failed to attract audiences, leaving fans and industry insiders disappointed. While Salman Khan has remained tight-lipped about the film’s underperformance, Murugadoss has finally shared his perspective.

In a conversation with Velaipechu Voice, Murugadoss revealed that the film had a deeply emotional foundation. “It’s about a king who doesn’t truly understand his wife. We are all like that; whether it’s with our mother, friend, or wife, we often don’t value relationships. Only when someone leaves us forever do we feel the weight of guilt,” he explained.

The director further elaborated that in the story, after the king loses his wife, her organs are donated to three different people. He then seeks out those recipients in an attempt to fulfill the things he couldn’t do for her. Along the way, he befriends an entire village. “The story was emotional, but I couldn’t execute it well,” Murugadoss admitted.

Reflecting on his journey, the 50-year-old filmmaker drew comparisons with his earlier blockbuster Ghajini: “I could pull off Ghajini because it was a remake, something I had already done before. With Sikandar, being an original, I lacked the same command. I’m not saying I won’t return to Hindi cinema. I definitely will if I find my comfort zone. But when audiences don’t connect with my vision, it affects me deeply.”

What Went Wrong With Sikandar?

Despite its ambitious and layered concept, Sikandar was criticized for flat writing and lackluster execution. Critics called it a “missed opportunity” despite its stellar cast, grand production, and intriguing premise.

The film’s failure was particularly significant for several reasons, including AR Murugadoss’ previous directorial, Darbar (2018), starring Rajinikanth, which had also underperformed. In addition, Salman Khan’s recent films hadn’t delivered major box office numbers either. Meanwhile, for Rashmika Mandanna, the film marked a stumble after her consecutive successes with Animal, Pushpa 2, and Chhavva.

Salman Khan and AR Murugadoss’ Upcoming Projects

On the work front, Salman Khan is gearing up for Battle Of Galwan, directed by Apoorva Lakhia. The film, co-starring Chitrangda Singh, will be based on the 1962 Sino-Indian War. The makers have already released its motion poster.

Meanwhile, AR Murugadoss has moved on to his next directorial venture, Madharaasi, which is currently in production.
