Sean Diddy Combs has criticised the release of a Netflix documentary series about him with a strong statement of protest one day before the global launch of the project. In response to the Variety article, Combs’ representative said that the streaming platform delivered a shameful hit job and that the series is “full of unauthorised, stolen footage” which was definitely “not for public consumption”. This dispute has escalated after the teaser published by Netflix included the audio of a phone call allegedly recorded less than a week before Combs’ 2024 arrest. For the unversed, the show is produced by 50 cent.

For the unversed, that phone call eventually became evidence in the federal case in which Combs was found guilty of transporting individuals for prostitution but was acquitted of s*x-trafficking and racketeering charges. In the short recording, Combs informs an associate that the help of an expert in “the dirtiest kinds of business” is what they need; at the same time, he admits that he is “losing.”
Netflix also told Variety that they had received a statement from the director, Alexandria Stapleton, who said the team in charge of the production had legally obtained all the footage and had obtained full authorisation for their use. Ms Stapleton also revealed that the team went to great lengths to ensure the safety of the original filmmaker’s identity and that they had made several attempts to reach Sean Combs’ legal team for a statement or an interview, but had not received any reply.
In addition to that, Ms Stapleton added that Sean Combs has himself filmed a great number of aspects of his life over the past several years, and it has been his habit for a long time.
The spokesperson for Combs claims that the snippets shown in the teaser were segments selectively taken from Combs large archive, which he has been personally compiling since he was a teenager, and that, as of that time, it was for the purpose of one day having the opportunity to create his own narrative.
The series offers an in-depth look at Combs’ journey from him being a young talent scout with big dreams to the most influential people in hip-hop. The documentary, through the interviews of the former collaborators, friends, and staff, along with the previously unexposed footage, wants to show the layers of Combs’ public image as well as look into the shadowy accusations, which, according to the filmmakers, have defined his recent legacy, most thoroughly.
The four-hour series aims both to look back on Combs’ career and to uncover the dark forces that, according to the creators, helped him build his empire and they even hinted at new revelations in the program coming to the platform.
