Making waves in couture, JJ Valaya launched his label and founded The House of Valaya in 1992. What truly makes his ensembles unique was the intricacy of the designs. The brand now curates Haute Couture, Bridal & Occasion Wear, Bridge, Home and Luxury design services. Even today, he is one of the leading couturier of India that the new designers are inspired by.
2017 was a special year for JJ Valaya as a brand, as it completed a quarter of a century in the Indian fashion industry. The collection, The Classics Of JJ Valaya, represented the uniqueness in the craft that he has brought into the industry in his 25 years of experience. As the name suggests, the show at Amazon India Fashion Week was a celebration of what the label truly stands for.
The showcase of the occasion-wear depicted the beautiful journey of the brand through their indigenous inspirations. The three all-time favourite inspos came together to create an ethereal collection. Gulistan, Jamavar and Punjab were the highlights throughout. Nature, especially flowers, was interpreted in the form of signature prints and antique embroideries through Gulistan. The famous Indian paisley combined seamlessly with the traditional Jamavar motifs made their way on modern silhouettes. The court dressing of the Maharajas of Kapurthala inspired the native Punjab element of the collection.
These three inspirations came together to celebrate the labels’ fabulous years. The rich embroidery in regal shades of red, black and gold gave the lehenga choli a contemporary vibe. But, it was evident that the surface ornamentation was the important feature of the show.
Keeping up with the modern times, JJ Valaya has always managed to be trendy, and with the cohesive showcase, it was even more evident that his legacy lies in the intricacy and details of his designs.
