If you can describe Monisha Jaising‘s design in one word, then it has to be the word glamorous. After graduating from the American College for Applied Arts and then The Royal College of Arts (London), Monisha Jaising started her journey in the design world in the year 1989. She was one of the pioneers of the Indian Fashion Industry.
Her brand has seen expansion into luxury sportswear, resort wear, luxe evening wear, bridal couture and even kids wear. Her forte lies in blending the Western and Eastern aesthetics. The way she interprets fashion is always duo relevant. Hence, her designs are always deemed current and trendy.
20th January: We can learn a thing or two on how to kick-start a party from Monisha Jaising’s show that took place on an international luxury cruise liner -Costa. Being the opening show of Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2017, the expectations were high and Monisha Jaising fulfilled them, over and above.
The fashion show held on the cruise ship docked at a pier by the Arabian Sea was definitely unique and the designs displayed matched the breathtaking view. Each gown had its own silhouette, its own design detail and its own story. Monisha’s glamorous signature style was on its glorious display. The array of evening gowns was stellar. It perfectly showcased the extravagance of a cocktail night. Front slit dress, cocktail saris, the fit and flare silhouette with a billowy skirt and off-shoulder gowns, all ensured that the glitz and glam will never die down on a party night.
The colours black, gold, grey, white, rose pink and rose tan had a few breathers of red, orange, fuchsia. The vibrant breaks did justice to the whole lineup. Luxe textiles like heavy bonded satin, wool crepe and Italian organza with details of chikankari and metal encrusted chain mail lend themselves as a base to the collection.
To conclude this fabulous show, actress Sonakshi Sinha made an appearance as a showstopper. She donned an orange gown with one shoulder silhouette and a train that had a different colour inside. The solid striking colours and the shape made it a stunning showstopper outfit.
It was a banging start to the season by Monisha Jaising. Her show was a definition of opulence and exquisite design and we were mesmerised.
28th July: Monisha Jaising brought to life the grandeur of the Opera through her couture collection with the same name that was displayed at India Couture Week 2017. The showcase encapsulated not only the look, but also the feel that you experience after watching an opera.
Monisha spoke about the inspiration in depth by stating, “Having been to the Opera in the past, the inspiration for my collection was triggered by the fond memory of the Opera house flowing with people in their finery. I find the whole process of displaying this finery starting from the entrance, walking up the palatial stairways, to the seating area to be exceptionally enticing! You can sort of say that it is a fashion show for the people, by the people.”
The rich fabrics, elegant designs and luxe colours played their part in this Opera. Fabrics like lamé, velvet metallics, tulle, chikankari, Italian organza and banarasi metallic satin were draped to form some stellar evening gown. These statement-worthy silhouettes would be perfect to go to an opera in, attend a white-tie event or a high-profile party or even to walk down a red carpet. Concept lehengas, evening dresses, cocktail saris, evening gowns, crop tops and ball skirts, everything was part of this display. Even the colours reflected the opulence as we saw burgundy to rose pink and from metallics to ice blue, make appearance on the runway.
Of course, the show like this one is incomplete without a stunning showstopper. Shilpa Shetty Kundra sashayed down the runway in a luxe brocade gown featuring one-shoulder billowy sleeve and a wrap drape on the other side.
It is safe to say that Monisha Jaising’s Opera was an entertaining and enthralling show that displayed opulence in its highest form.
