Payal Khandwala‘s design philosophy is one that you cannot compare to any other. The thing we absolutely love about her designs is how she takes classic silhouettes, styles, and fabrics and turns it into art because that is where her journey first began. A visual artist before anything else, Payal Khandwala showed us her artistic side with abstract and figurative paintings. If we delve deeper into her designs and styles you will notice that her clothes are simply a shift of base for her—From a canvas to fabrics. Art has always been at the center of everything she creates. Whether it’s a classic desi-inspired kurta or a 3-way pleated top, Payal Khandwala is a label for the intelligent, non-conformist woman. Her designs speak comfort fitted into luxury which also gives you timeless style and a spirited attitude.
This collection was a tribute to Payal Khandwala‘s five-year journey in the world of fashion and to mark this special occasion, they decided to do their spring/summer line a little differently.
Devoid of pigment and defined by a strong line; I kept the illustration minimal yet very graphic. The pattern was drafted freehand on paper and I played with scale and placement to cement this idea, with a motif that is both fierce but still rooted in something feminine, much like the clothes themselves. In a stark contrast to our masculine lion motif last season, our rose is its counterpart this time around.
To add to their classic colour palette of coffee, crimson, citrine they added jewel tones for their SS17 Back To Basics line. In a way, this collection is also a tribute to all the various indispensable elements that form Payal Khandwala’s visual vocabulary and what precisely separates us from the rest.
