Shantanu & Nikhil Mehra are a designer duo whose shows we always look forward to because it’s so much more than just clothes on a runway. Each time they successfully put together a collection it translates into a story, one that has us gripped from beginning to the end. They’re not shy to experiment and strongly believe in producing clothes that symbolize progressivism and individuality. Through their art, they have always sought to break stereotypes in fashion, be it through something as simple as silhouettes. Both Shantanu and Nikhil have created a brand that is accepting of every kind of man and woman, strong or soft, feminine or masculine.

21st July: Pushing their concept of The India Story a bit further, Shantanu & Nikhil’s Autumn/Winter couture collection called Independence encapsulated the essence of a progressive India. The inspiration was derived from three most luxurious forms of freedom; Freedom to choose, freedom to live and freedom to call oneself proud citizens.
To capture such an essence of the freedom might be difficult, but Shantanu & Nikhil achieved it seamlessly through their design aesthetics. The autumn/winter colour trends went well with the theme and included colours like deep purple, abyss green and accents of orange, aerosol blue and paint yellow. The silhouettes were a beautiful confluence of western shapes with evident indigenous details. From the hats to the badges, the military elements were unmissable.
Actress Parineeti Chopra made an ethereal appearance in a billowy gown that represented the romance of a dark garden of roses. The cold-shoulder style, the pleated details and fit and flare silhouette made for a statement-worthy appearance. The same mood reflected on the Arjun Kapoor’s bandgala as well as he walked down the runway with an asymmetric kurta underneath.
Shantanu & Nikhil’s collection Independence made an impact not only via the array of silhouettes, but also through the underlined tone it represented.
The conversation about equality is growing fast in the fashion space, and Shantanu & Nikhil‘s collection called The India Story is an essential addition to it. Their line showcased gender-neutral clothing represented in an earthy palette with brilliant tailoring that combined together to make statement-worthy ensembles. Their inspiration was rooted in the multi-tribal shades of the streets of Rajasthan. The monochromatic palette ruled through the show but accents of mustard and ochre brought about a delightful contrast.
We love the message Shantanu & Nikhil wanted to give out with this line. This collection was a depiction of the emerging new voice of the millennials, one that breeds on the grounds of egalitarianism.
There’s a tribe out there for everyone and this Tribe, being a cultural cauldron, is a move towards breaking boundaries, reinforcing our belief to go beyond just the façade. It is the dawn of a new era, an era that will act as a catalyst for new changes that will weave the whole country together. It is time to revisit those attributes that make our modern Indian civilian forces inimitable and rare.
Plus, seeing the Saif Ali Khan on the ramp as a showstopper upped the sophistication of the entire show. The collection was a mix of all things awesome—from lehengas to eccentrically draped saris, gender-fluid kurtas and more.
