Designer duo Shyamal & Bhumika’s design ethos showcase Indian crafts heritage in a new limelight. The focus is on the modern bride and her perception of fashion. With Bhumika’s graduating as a fashion designer from National Institute Of Fashion Technology and Shyamal’s education in the subject of fashion in London and Milan, the confluence of these two distinct design worlds is very evident in their creations.

14th March: The couturier designer duo Shyamal & Bhumika showcased their collection, A Parisian Symphony, for the very first time at Amazon India Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2018. They described their experience in these words, “We are thrilled to be associated with Amazon India Fashion Week, a remarkable platform created by FDCI for established as well as young and upcoming designers to showcase their collections. We visualise the collection through our muse who dresses extraordinarily for an evening out at the opera in an extremely dramatic setting of autumn. Globetrotting, tasteful, powerful, feminine and sophisticated is how we describe our muse who is aptly showcased in A Parisian Symphony.”
The collection revolved around a Parisian evening and the richness it exudes. They describe the concept of A Parisian Symphony as, ‘The sky turns dusky, winds blow across the misty avenues, the birds bid farewell to the blooms of paradise. As dusk sets in draping a purple haze over the velvet skies, the lights shimmer like stars along the river, just for the night’.
Silk skirts, velvet dresses, statement jacket and luxe saris made for an intriguing range. But the intricacy of the craft made an impressive impression. The floral motifs are bedazzled with multi-coloured sequins and bugle beads. The colours were true to the season with deep win complementing the dark greens and the evening is depicted through the twilight blue and black.
Actress Diana Penty was the star of this luxe evening as she walked the ramp is a sleeveless velvet cowl-neck top teamed with a green embroidered skirt. Here’s what she had to say about the designer duo, “I have always been a fan of Shyamal and Bhumika’s designs. They blend traditional silhouettes with modern sensibilities which makes their designs perfect for the young woman of today. What I love the most is their use of colours, textures and intricate embroidery. I really enjoyed walking for them.”
Shyamal & Bhumika mysterious, yet romantic collection transported us to a whimsical world of A Parisian Symphony.
4th February: As the name suggested, ‘Wonderland’ was all about the mystical, fairytale showcased by the designer duo Shyamal & Bhumika at Lakmé Fashion Week Spring/Resort 2018. The couturiers tried to reimagine a picture-perfect fairytale wedding.
The ensembles were a great canvas for the detailed handiwork that went into the numerous beads, crystals, and pearls that were strung together on tulle. The hand-woven silks made an appearance too. Subtle shades like soft blues, shadow greys, beige and peach had brakes of striking violet and green. Flowing satin and appliqué organza was the base for the stunning saris, flared skirts and stylish play dresses. The modern silhouette is perfect for today’s bride.
Bollywood’s queen, Kangana Ranaut made a regal appearance on the ramp in a sleeveless outfit with a heavily embroidered bodice and a flare that encapsulates the magic of the Wonderland collection. The tulle veil just added to the drama of the ensemble. She even commented on the collection by saying, “I have always been inspired and in awe of Indian couturiers and Shyamal & Bhumika are a fantastic designer duo. It is an absolute pleasure to be the showstopper for their show at Lakme Fashion Week for the launch of their collection Wonderland. Their efforts to put Indian fashion on the global map is admirable as well as how they amalgamate global sensibilities with our rich Indian heritage. I absolutely love the way they have captured the essence of their muse and I am thrilled to don the design they have made for me.”
Shyamal & Bhumika focused on the fantasy of a perfect fairytale wedding for a contemporary bride and hence, it turned out to be a beautiful showcase.
