A tearful and emotional tribute to Dharmendra was held in Delhi on Thursday. On the occasion, his wife, veteran actor and MP Hema Malini, could not hold back her tears when she spoke to the people. The prayer meet, held at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre, was attended by political leaders, family members, and fans to remember the star who lit the silver screen.
Hema Malini Breaks Down At Dharmendra’s Prayer Meet
With support from daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol, Hema Malini took the microphone and spoke from her heart, referring to the death of her husband as a loss she is still unable to come to terms with. She mentioned that though the whole country is shedding tears for him, in her case, it is like having lost a friend whose company was the essence of every stage of her life.
Hema also mentioned one dream of Dharmendra that he could not see accomplished: his desire to release a book of his own poetry. She remembered that writing was very easy for him, especially in Urdu, and that he could prepare a verse promptly for any occasion. Hema shared that she had always advised him to collect his poems into a book, which he had only recently begun to seriously plan, but the sudden turn of events left the project unfinished.
Looking back upon their relationship, Hema stated that their romantic scenes on the screen had eventually become a real love story that was kept alive by the couple’s affection and strength. She called Dharmendra her “rock” and a “tower of strength” who had not only been with her through every good and bad time but had also provided their marital bond with vigor through his fidelity and gentleness.
The occasion in Delhi was attended by many of the heavyweight leaders, among them Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, Kiren Rijiju, and Kangana Ranaut. This prayer meeting was subsequent to another held on November 27 in Mumbai, organized by Dharmendra’s sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. Hema and her daughters skipped that event and conducted a sacred ceremony at home on the same day.
