Vir Das
Vir Das

So I had quite a nice Sunday. After uploading all my weekend pictures on Facebook and tagging everyone (which took about 3 hours) I updated my blog and decided to check out Vir Das do his comedy routine at Sophia College, Mumbai. I first met Vir over a decade-and-a-half ago in Delhi, at which point he had a slightly psycho girlfriend (and boy I hope if she’s reading this she doesn’t know its her) and he’s pretty much always had this tell-it-like-it-is sense of humor and clearly lots of real-life inspiration for his bits on love and relationships. You’ll be surprised how quickly in his routine you’ll start to like him. He’s easy to relate to, obviously very funny and doesn’t flinch when it comes to saying those slightly awkward things that make us giggle (sometimes uncomfortably) and often burst out laughing doing the whole roflmao* routine. I guess you could call it slightly self-deprecating humor done with a desi twist (masala marke if you please.)

What was really nice as well was the fact that the entire 2 hours (and let me tell you its not easy making people laugh for that long but the lady next to me was bright pink from it) went by pretty fast. Plus the light and sound design was definitely up to scratch with International standards. Apart from the two crazy quirky opening act characters he does in costume, his song (and sort of dance) act in the end and the ceaseless war on Himesh Reshamiya‘s Tandoori Nights (hysterical) I also love the fact that he managed to infuse a power point presentation with enough humor to throw another (very new age) comedian in the mix aptly labeled “Slideshow Bob” who tells jokes, cues applause and has apparently hit on a few of Vir’s girlfriends (if you don’t believe me please watch a movie called “Electric Dreams.”)
In fact here’s a snip from YouTube.

The show which he dedicated to all the ladies in the house on International Women’s Day assured full punishment for the men in our lives (which he mostly delivered but didn’t spare the fairer sex either.) Everything you’ve experienced in a relationship, the good, the bad but mostly the ugly delivered in his own unique inimitable and hilarious style. Good stuff Vir! Here’s a peak.

P.S. By the way if that thing he said about boyfriend’s claiming their hot platonic friend is “just not their type” but secretly would hit that in a heartbeat I hope he knows he may have just abetted several murders. Including my boyfriend’s.
