Karan Johar

It’s no surprise that all of us at the MissMalini HQ are ardent admirers of Mr. Karan Johar – the one-man army who has entertained us as a producer, talk show host, dancer, reality TV show judge and definitely as a director! The man is now gearing up to make his big bad Bollywood debut with Bombay Velvet. But honestly, I kinda miss the movies he made. So, on that note, here’s a definitive ranking of the movies Karan has directed just to bring to his notice that he REALLY needs to start directing more!

6) Student Of The Year

Student Of The Year was a fun breezy college rom-com we know Karan Johar is a amazing at making. But after My Name Is Khan, I just expected him to make something… you know… better! SOTY just looked like a rehash of High School Musical and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. It did give us three fresh faces that are the biggest rising stars of Bollywood right now!

5) Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna

Ah, what a lost opportunity! So much could be made on the theme of infidelity, so much could be done with a cast as amazing as KANK‘s. Sadly, the movie was an uneven mix of being too apologetic to show cheating but wanting to push the envelope st the same time. This just resulted in becoming a sad mess.

4) My Name Is Khan

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are always magical on screen, but with that unnecessary hurricane scene and that terrible Barack Obama impersonator, I just couldn’t take MNIK very seriously. However, SRK was amazing, hence brownie points!

3) Bombay Talkies

With Bombay Talkies,  Karan actually managed to push the envelope, especially when it comes to portraying homosexuality in Bollywood. Rani Mukerji, Randeep Hooda and Saqib Saleem really brought life to his story in this anthology movie.

2) Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Never have I ever sobbed in a movie as much I did during the train scene right before the Interval in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. For sentimental reasons and for bringing ‘COOL‘ back in Bollywood (literally and metaphorically), everyone’s favourite romantic movie comes second.

1) Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

I can write a thesis on K3G but I really don’t need to. Clearly, the Sunday reruns of this classic on Set Max and Zee Cinema prove that Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is loved by one and all. This movie has something for everyone! Love Kajol’s energy and Shah Rukh’s charm? The first half is your boo, love Hrithik‘s biceps and Kareena Kapoor‘s iconic Poo? Then just wait for the second half to begin! Seriously, watch K3G from whichever time and you will be entertained.

Basically, the point of this article is that Karan Johar really needs to make more movies! Cannot wait for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil anymore!
