From Karishma Kapoor to Karisma Kapur. From Ugly Duckling to Fashion Icon. From Abhishek Bachchan to having her own two bachchas. Karisma Kapoor has done it all in the past 37 years.
June 25th was her 37th birthday and we at MissMalini take a walk down memory lane as we leaf through pictures of this lovely lady.
Karishma made her debut in 1991 in the film Prem Quaidi (poster above) but it wasn’t till 1996 that she won her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress for the film Raja Hindustani (paired opposite Aamir Khan).
She followed up that award with Best Supporting Actress Award and National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for the film Dil To Pagal Hai, where she shared screen space with Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit.
In 1999, Karisma starred with Salman Khan in Biwi No.1, which became a colossal hit. Sushmita Sen and Anil Kapoor also starred in the movie.
The start of the next millennium – the year 2000 – was lucky for Karisma again. She won her second Filmfare Best Actress Award for the film, Fiza. She starred opposite Hrithik Roshan and Jaya Bachchan in this flick.
The same year, she was critically acclaimed for her role in Zubeida (MissMalini’s favorite Karishma Kapoor film!) and won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance.
However, in October 2002 her personal life came to the fore when her engagement to Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan was announced on his father, Amitabh’s sixtieth birthday. However, less than six months later they split, causing rumour mills to work overtime.
Later, towards the end of 2003, she married divorcee Sanjay Kapur, the ex-husband of designer Nandia Mahtani.
The marriage has been dogged with persistent rumours of the couple breaking-up, especially after the birth of their daughter, Samaira, in 2005.
However, last year Karisma gave birth to a baby boy in March (Kiaan Raj Kapur), putting rest to those rumours.
