One thing that girls have a love-hate relationship with, is lipsticks—can’t live with them, can’t live without them. Do you sometimes feel like a completely different person after applying lipstick, or is it just me? It’s great how a lipstick can instantly make you look put-together and add some colour to your face. However, what makes them so frustrating is the fact that you have to keep touching it up and don’t even get me started on the transfer of colour, drinking anything without a straw is a nightmare. If you’re like me and you hate liquid matte lipsticks (no one wants their lips to turn into the Sahara desert) then these sneaky hacks will make your lipstick application last longer:

1. Exfoliate + Hydrate

One of my biggest pet peeves is watching people put lipstick on chapped lips *cringe*. To make sure that your lipstick application will be smooth and even, it’s important to exfoliate and hydrate your lips. Just with a simple lip scrub you can remove the dead skin off your lips and make the texture even. Using a lip balm will help hydrate your lips and make them look plump. This hack will ensure that the texture of your lips will be smooth and that your lipstick application will last longer.

2. Prep + Prime

This may seem like an unnecessary step but it definitely makes your lipstick last longer. Think of it this way: primers are a bit sticky in texture which will help your lipstick last long. If you’re someone with perpetually dry lips, then don’t skip the lip primer. My favourite product to use for this step is Neutrogena‘s hydrating lip treatment. It’s very hydrating (thanks to the HA present in it) and since it’s colourless and has a sticky (ish) texture, it acts as a great lip primer.

3. Line + Fill

Filling in your lips with a lip liner which is similar in colour as your lipstick, will make prolong the life of your lipstick application. This step works wonders for dark lipsticks. Using a lip liner first will give your lipstick something to adhere to, hence making it last longer. Also, lip liners are great to define the shape of your lips.

4. Apply + Blot

There are a ton of different methods to apply lipstick. You can directly apply it from the tube or apply it with your fingers to get the exact hue you want. Apply some lipstick (whichever way you want) and blot it.

5. Set + Powder

After you’re done with the application, set it with a translucent powder. Place a thin tissue paper over your lips and set the lip colour underneath with the help of a brush and some translucent powder. After this step, you’re good to go!
