Washing Your Hair

Washing your hair may seem like a normal routine thing to do. However, you might be making these common mistakes while washing your hair without even realising it. These may seem like minuscule mistakes, but they can add up and cause a great deal of damage to your locks. So the next time you wash your hair keep these common mistakes in mind and avoid them at all costs:

1. Shower Temperature

As nice and comforting a piping hot shower may feel, it equally harms your skin and hair. Hot water can not only dry out your hair but it can also cause frizz and split ends. So the next time you have to wash your hair, turn the water temperature down a notch. As you get used to showering with colder temperatures, you can slowly transition into taking cold showers. It may seem crazy right now but it actually has a long list of benefits, some of them include smooth hair and glowing skin.

2. Wrong Products

Sometimes the answers to our questions are sitting right in front of us. If you’ve ever wondered why your hair is frizzy or lacks shine then you should first look at your shampoo and conditioner. Don’t neglect the process of trying to figure out your scalp and hair type. Your shampoo should be suitable for your hair type and also your hair wash schedule. If your hair is oily and you wash your hair often then you should opt for a clarifying shampoo with a gentle formula. If you’re confused about what works for your hair then the next time you visit the salon, have a chat with your hairdresser about what products will suit your hair the best.

3. Skipping Conditioner

Whether you have dry, oily, thin or thick hair, you should use a conditioner. Using a conditioner on your hair will help deliver some moisture back your hair strands. It will also seal your hair cuticle with a protective layer which will make your hair shiny and smooth.

MM Pro Tip: Always apply conditioner to the ends of your hair, never apply it to your scalp. Stay away from 2-in-1 products that contain both shampoo and conditioner.

4. Not Rinsing Enough

This piece of advice is applicable before and after you shampoo your hair. When you hop into the shower, stand under the water for at least 30 seconds to wet your hair. If you put shampoo on a dry scalp then you’ll end up scrubbing it much harder than you usually would while rinsing it off. Hence you should always make sure that your hair is drenched with water before applying shampoo. After you’re done applying shampoo and conditioner to your hair take your time to rinse it out. Rinsing it with cold water can help speed up the process. If your scalp is itchy or your hair falls flat then you’ll know that there is still some product residue left.

5. Towel Drying

After you’ve stepped out of the shower don’t use a bath towel to dry your hair. It can be harsh on your hair and cause frizz. Instead, you should use an old cotton t-shirt or a Turkish towel to dry your hair. You should use them to soak up any extra water left in your hair and let your hair airdry.
