Cancer is among one of the top 10 causes of death in the world. It affects the growth and division of our cells, changing it in some very perverse ways. Although all cancers are a result of genetic mutation and/or DNA damage, there are some that we have no control over and some that can be avoided if we follow a better lifestyle and let go of certain bad habits. Scientists have been researching some cancer-causers, also known as carcinogens, and here are the prime suspects that they’ve found.

1. Sugar

If you thought that over-consumption of sugar could result in just diabetes then I have some bad news. Cancer loves using sugar as a fuel and recent studies revealed that sugar might actually fuel the growth of tumours in the body. It can actively damage the cells in our bodies and increase the chances of cancer development.

2. Sun Exposure

If you’re someone who loves bathing in the sun for a good tan, you’ve got to be more careful from now on. Every time you plan to be out in the sun for more than 15 minutes, make sure you apply sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and try to find shade. As per the Skin Cancer Foundation, the chances of developing melanoma (a type of cancer) are 75% higher among those who use a tanning bed before the age of 35.

3. Harmful Chemicals At The Workplace

In many cases, people have no choice but to work in environments that possess high risks of cancer. People who work in the aluminium, paint and tar industry come in contact with carcinogen benzene. Others at risk are those working as rubber manufacturers, nail salon workers and hairdressers. It has also been revealed that those who work night shifts are also at risk.

4. Estrogen And Birth Control

If you didn’t know, hormones can cause cancer too! The risk of developing breast cancer is higher among women who start menstruating early on in their lives and even those who go into menopause late. The reason is that these women are comparatively exposed to more progesterone and estrogen. Apart from these, women who adopt birth control pills also are at a higher risk of developing cervical and breast cancer.

These are just 4 out of the many things that have been linked to cancer by science. At the same time, there are measures you can take to reduce the risk of developing cancer. Some of them include easy measures like consuming particular foods.
