  • The CDC recommends washing our masks once a day at least.
  • Emily de Golian, a board-certified dermatologist at Dermatology Consultants in Georgia said masks shouldn’t be worn for more than half an hour, as the dampness in our breath makes the mask less effective.
  • Dimitar Marinov, assistant professor in the department of hygiene at the Medical University of Varna said that people who are frontline workers should ideally be washing their fabric masks every couple of hours.

  • Rhodes said that masks are best cleaned by detergents that include bleach-like compounds or other such active ingredients.
  • De Golian explained that the fabric masks should be washed in the warmest possible water that the fabric too can tolerate.
  • Marinov advised that masks can be disinfected by either ironing or even tossing them in the oven for about 20 minutes at 160°F.
