Is it just me or does it feel like we’ve been in lockdown for a whole year? Since going to the salon seems like a distant dream, I’ve been figuring out ways to tackle all kinds of hair-related problems from the comfort of my home. Whilst I now know all my options when it comes to brows, I hear that many of you have been wondering about how you can maintain your hair colour during this time. If you aren’t confident of dyeing your locks at home, here are a few tricks that will help you extend the life of your colour.

1. Be Gentle To Your Hair

Skip your wash day. Put down your hot tools. Excessive shampooing and heat styling are the two worst things you can do to your strands. By avoiding these habits, you can prevent your colour from fading and also improve the health of your locks. Instead, use dry shampoo to tackle your greasy roots and opt for air-drying when you do wash your hair. Honestly, since you are staying at home anyway, with no one to comment on the state of your hair, this is the perfect time to try these tricks out.

2. Invest In The Right Shampoo

When you do need to wash your hair, always opt for a sulfate-free formula as they are less harsh on your strands. If you have blonde highlights, you should also try a purple-toned shampoo as it helps neutralise the brassy or yellow tones in your hair. If you are a brunette, switch to a blue formula to counteract any orange hues. Remember to wash your hair with cold water to seal your colour in.

3. Try A Gloss

If your hair is looking dull, you can revive with a weekly gloss. To use, liberally coat your wet hair with the formula and leave on for about 5-10 minutes. Once you rinse it off, you will notice that your hair looks as shiny as it was before.

4. Nourish Your Mane

There’s no better time to indulge in a mask. To keep your hair colour vivid, use a protective mask once a week. Since dyes can also wreak havoc on your hair, I would recommend using a reparative treatment every fortnight to strengthen your tresses.

5. Touch Up Your Roots

Have a Zoom party to attend but worried about the state of your roots? Cover them up with a temporary tint! Just spritz on the formula on to the crown of your hair to camouflage any greys. Blend it in and wait for a few minutes so that the colour can dry down. These sprays usually last up to your next wash and are great to use when you are in a hurry!
