7 Hair Colour Trends To Keep Your Eye On This Year

Kanak Devnani

Every year or every season if you’re so inclined, provide plenty of opportunities for switching up your hair or hair colour. While we might be consciously limiting our salon visits at least we can finally get our much-needed hair appointment. If you’re looking to experiment or just get a simple change you’ve come to the right place. We’ve listed out the colour trends that are picking up momentum and you’re about to see them everywhere. That said, of course, a lot of the trends are all about subtlety and low-maintenance but on the other end, there’s also an influx of bolder colours. There’s no time like the present to reinvent yourself and when you’re ready to head to the salon bookmark these cute looks to show your colourist.

1. Cinnamon Swirl Highlights

Brown tones are in for 2021 and so are brown highlights. This cinnamon shade is the perfect highlight shade for brunettes who want to go lighter without going blonde. A mix of warm caramel and auburn hues, it is just a tad bit lighter than your natural base and is a great way to refresh your look.

2. Hazelnut Brown

This is the perfect brown hue if you have naturally dark hair and just want a little lift. It switches up your whole hue and is much less damaging to the hair. Plus it totally won’t fry your strands! Go all over with a mix of rich cool and warm tones to add a subtle dimension to your dark base colour.

3. Shadow Roots

A softer version of an ombre, this style has your dark roots that seamlessly blended into your brighter ends. Less harsh than a traditional highlight or contrast jump of the original ombre it promotes a soft natural feel and extends the life of your colour. Which ultimately equals fewer salon visits.

4. Pastel Pink Hair

Bold, bright and pastel colours are all totally in fashion. In fact this year we might see more colour than ever. However, recently baby pink has been a huge trend at the moment. Just ask the slew of celebs like Demi Lovato, Kaia Gerber and most recently Lana Condor. While she opted for a Unicorn pink shade, you can pick a pink that can be as bold and subversive or demure and delicate as you want it to be.

5. Chunky highlights

This early 2000s method of highlighting is making a huge comeback and how. These highlights are meant to create a stark contrast against your natural hair colour but to keep things more natural go for two shades lighter than your base hair colour. All over highlights, face-framing streaks or money pieces take your pick.

6. Rouge

Literally, all shades of red are super trendy right now. After it’s appearance in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, it’s been more popular than ever. Even Gigi Hadid took the plunge to a more cooper shade. The most popular shade of red is a warm to vibrant copper tone that looks stunning on medium to deeper skin tones. The colour looks great whether it’s bold or more toned down. If you’re looking for more red hair inspo you can check out our list here.

7. Natural hair colour

While everybody’s excited about changing their hair on the other end of the spectrum, many want to go back to their natural colours —or at the very least look more naturalish. Something super easy to maintain and avoiding endless touch-ups.
