I remember watching Yami Gautam appearing on my TV screen at primetime in the show Yeh Pyaar Na Hoga Kam and connecting with her instantly. Since I was quite young then, the point of connect was that her surname in the show belonged to my caste group, and hence began a journey of following her career trajectory and admiring her from afar. Today she is one of the most successful leading actresses in Hindi cinema with about half a dozen films in her kitty already, and it feels great to see her at that position.

The year 2021 has been really special for her on the personal and professional front. She got married to director Aditya Dhar and workwise, she is on a roll. Yami is appreciative of the success she has received and admits that this year has given her the opportunity to work with some outstanding actors, really good directors and technicians. She insists that even people are realising now that a film is an amalgamation of everybody.

Next up, she has Dasvi with Abhishek Bachchan and Nimrat Kaur, where she plays a cop, which is something very different from the kind of roles she has done till now. And Yami admits that there have been naysayers about her taking on that role but she has faith in herself.

This is what she has to say about playing a cop:

“Dasvi has me playing a cop and I am a jailer. It will be something different. I have been told, and it’s a fact, that I am not a tall girl or broad built. People have told me that I look so petite, how would I look convincing as a tough cop. But that’s my job to do right? So, I’ll do it.”

Talking about her experience on the film, Yami shares:

“I had a great time working on the film. Our director Tushar (Jalota), it’s his first film and he has worked really hard on it. Abhishek and Nimrat are amazing. It’s a Maddock film and they have always backed different and interesting concepts, so it was really fun collaborating.”

My admiration for Yami goes back years, so more than feeling happy, I feel proud to see the actress get the work and appreciation that she deserves. Apart from Dasvi, she also has A Thursday, LOST, OMG 2, and two rumoured projects—Dhoom Dhaam and Chor Nikal Ke Bhaaga. She is currently on the fast track and doesn’t show signs of slowing down and I am glad to be getting to see that journey in front of my eyes.
