Recently, rumors online began to circulate around the kissing scene in Avatar: Fire and Ash, with some social media users questioning whether or not Sigourney Weaver did kiss Jack Champion, who plays Spider in the movie. The question arose because of their age difference and the fact that Jack was still a teenager at the time that they shot the moment that they are concerned about in the scene involving those characters.

Did Sigourney Weaver Kiss Spider?

Sigourney Weaver’s character marks the return of the 76-year-old actress in a completely new avatar in Avatar: The Way of Water. Having previously starred in the 2009 series release, Weaver’s Dr. Grace Augustine has been replaced by ‘Kiri,’ a teenage Na’vi girl and adopted child of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña). In the movie, she shares a heartwarming kissing scene with Spider, a human boy who has been raised in Pandora and performed in the Avatar series aged 14 to 16 by Jack Champion.

Talking about this scene in an interview recently with The Hollywood Reporter, Weaver made it clear that there was no actual kiss between her and Champion. According to her, the producers were very careful since Champion was still very young. Additionally, they did not want to create any kind of awkwardness by shooting the scene. They made use of body doubles to ensure that everything went in a very proper and professional manner.

Weaver is pleased with the way the scene has been represented on film as well. In her view, the finished scene does come out as genuine, believable, and doesn’t call to mind the actual ages of the actors on screen. Weaver goes on to say that when the scene is considered in context, it merely becomes an innocent, goofy depiction of young love.

The relationship between Kiri and Spider has been discussed by James Cameron for its creative intent. Cameron admitted that there were some ideas about whether they should have an utmost platonic relationship or not. Cameron wanted to show reality through cinematography, even though they were confused about their emotions, just like any other adolescents of their age.
