Everyone we see around is trying to make healthier lifestyle choices. Whether it’s sleeping and waking up early, working out or eating right, we’ve been consciously trying to choose health over everything else. To help you with your self-care journey, we thought we’d list down a few reasons why you would much rather consume honey instead of processed sugar, as honey is natural, loaded with antioxidants, and has fewer calories compared to sugar.

1. Antibacterial Properties

“All honey is antibacterial because the bees add an enzyme that makes hydrogen peroxide,” said Peter Molan, director of the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. Information Source: www.realfoodforlife.com.

2. Digests Easily As Compared To Sugar

Processed sugar needs to be ingested before it is broken down. However, bees already add enzymes to the honey so the sugars in it are already broken down a bit and hence, it is easier to digest.

3. Suppresses A Cough

Studies have shown that honey soothes an irritated throat making it feel calm and hydrated. Drink it with warm water and some ginger for quick results.

4. Strengthens Immunity

As honey contains antioxidants and antibacterial properties, it keeps the body away from harmful bacteria and helps remove free radicals from the body too.

5. Better Substitute For Diabetics

Since honey is sweeter than processed sugar, you might consume less of it. While both will affect your sugar levels, at least honey is healthier than sugar because it contains no chemicals and is produced naturally. Plus, it also contains antibacterial properties that’ll boost your immunity.

6. Helps Improve Bowel Movements

As mentioned earlier, honey contains enzymes that act as a catalyst in the digestion process and help break down the sugar. This helps in digesting food faster and hence is a good remedy for constipation and IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).

As there are many honey brands out there that are not as natural as you would think, it’s important to check the labels and purchase organic honey instead. Add honey to your green tea, drink it with warm water in the morning, or add it to mocktails instead of sugar.
